  1. Looking to get my first trick ski. Can anybody point me to resources such as a review or a buying guide, or recommend what I should be looking for? I waterski about 10 times per year, and the idea is to get one trick set each time I am out. The last time I trick skied--about 10 years ago, I could get up, cross the wakes, and spin. Also if anyone is selling a good but cheap 43" trick ski, please let me know.
  2. Hello all! I just got a reflex binding and plate for my trick ski. As it stands, the plate doesn't line up with any holes on my ski so I'm going to need to drill new ones. Before I go putting new holes in my ski, I was wondering if anyone had advice for placing my binding so I only have to do it once. It's a 42" O'Brien Pro Trac from the 80s if that makes any difference.
  3. Hi, My friend and I are recent graduates from University of Michigan’s Waterski Team and are moving to Chicago in September. We would love to meet some people who also ski and maybe find a local ski lake or ski club! Let me know if anyone has suggestions!!!
  4. Hello Ballers! The OWSA is hosting a clinic for college aged skiers on Saturday, April 23rd! (generally M/W1). If you are based out of the state, and a college age skier (or know one and want to pass along the info), be sure to sign up! The clinic will take place in St. Mary's, OH and run from sun up to sun down. If you have any questions I will be more than happy to to answer them! 5. Just wondering? There are a few amazing Overall skiers in recent memory, but do how do you compare them to single event specialists?
  6. Dorien Llewellyn announced today that he'll be doing an ongoing series cataloging his upcoming season! Hopefully it takes off and give a more behind the scenes look at how the sport works!
  7. I'm just a washed up college skier at this point, but it feels great to know that there will be a real collegiate season again this year! Our club hosts a college tournament every year and then I will go to another to help officiate, and there's just something about the college tournament environment that is awesome. Who else is excited for the season?
  8. My daughter uses a Reflex for trick skiing. Her shin gets cut from the Reflex release mechanism. I thought for sure I've seen someone have a padded cover from Reflex for this very purpose, but I can't seem to find it online. Any thoughts or ideas here?
  9. Does anyone know the best way to protect the rear shin from the release lever? I've been watching the IWWF U17 trick prelims and finals and notice quite a few wearing what looks like a soccer shin guard on the rear leg. Also any resources for building skills toward larger trick run points (for old man skier.)
  10. Question: I have a new Quantum trick and was going to mount a Wileys high wrap - size Large. At first glance, it looks to be a huge struggle to squeeze into. Anyone have any experience with Wiley sizing and options for other boots to mount on a Quantum trick - perhaps a HO high wrap / Animal - will this fit the hole pattern? Thanks!
  11. Normally I keep these interviews in their one continuous thread, but this one was too good not to make its own discussion for. Dorien was nice enough to sit down with me for a full hour to talk about anything an everything related to skiing. This interview has so many great bits that I honestly think its well worth checking out. This week on "We Love College Waterski" I talked to Dorien Llewellyn, who at the time of recording was the NUMBER 1 Overall Skier in the world! We talked about potential growth, com-peting, College skiing vs professional, waterski tips, first jumps, sponsors in skiing (Redbull and Akquire), and much more!. There is a lot covered in this interview, so please check out the time stamps if you do not have the time to watch the full hour interview: You can find Dorien on Instagram @Dorienllewellyn Interview Highlights: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CLa_VU-B-St/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link You can find the video version on Youtube, and the audio version on Spotify, Apple, and Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/we-love-college-waterski/id1544822419 https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80NDM0YjBiOC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw==
  12. I have an extra trick ski that I am planning on giving to my collegiate team so that new people will have something to ride for trick. Because it would be the team's only trick ski it'll have to accomodate both LFF and RFF trickers. Would a patch of skateboard grip tape be good enough for beginning trickers to use? I can't imagine anyone would get beyond S,RS, B, F, O, RO, WB, WF without wanting to invest in their own gear. It's an old ski so I'm hesitant to put a bunch of holes in it for a RTP that might have to be flipped constantly.
  13. Hi all, I'm usually a collegiate skier, but due to COVID the season got moved from the fall. Because of that, I started going to "normal" tournaments that are just AWSA sanctioned. At one of them, the tournament director realized that most wakeboards fall into the AWSA definition of a trick ski. I didn't sign up to trick, but if I had, I would have been able to put up a massive PB with all tricks being worth full points instead of the NCWSA half points. The rule: "[Equipment and Definitions] 8.03 Skis A. Maximum ski width shall not exceed 35% of the length. ... D. Trick skis: 1. Skis used in the Tricks event shall not have fins. 2. Trick skis with molded rails/grooves less than 1/2" are allowed. 3. A foot pad cemented to the ski as a place for the rear foot is also permitted. E. With all bindings, fins, etc., installed, the ski must float. F. Attaching two separate skis together in any manner is prohibited." Nowhere does it specify binding placement like in the NCWSA rulebook, which specifies that the front binding must be within 10* parallel with the front of the ski to be counted as a trick ski. Would this be something to be concerned about and looked at for a change moving forward?
  14. Erika Lang just set a pending world record of 11,260! She is the first woman to break 11k!
  15. Patricio Font tricked 12,050 this past weekend. He has had an amazing year. He won Open Worlds & Masters and holds the U17 World Record. He is the 6th skier to trick over 12k and joins a very exclusive club: Alexi Zharnasek Nicholas Le Forestier Pierre Ballon Jimmy Siemers Russell Gay @mlusa https://www.instagram.com/p/B4J-BfWh_XQ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
  16. I’ve been using a Wiley binding on my trick for a long time but I’m not in love with it, my sets are limited due to cramping and I feel like the high wrap is to high. I’ve used the reflex but I have a tendency to bash my shin on the release and that feels terrible. For clarification I’m talking hand pass set up. Anyway are there more compact heal releases or is there a no release setup option? Let’s hear it!
  17. Hi, the standard PTP rear toe binding for my D3 trick ski does not allow me to position the rear toe at the position I like. Since I must use the inserts, I have to make a custom binding plate. Since I don't want the plate to rust, I have the following question: What is the specification of the metal that I should use for the binding plate? Is the plate typically 100% aluminum or is an alloy? Kind regards, Tom
  18. I see lots of skiers modifying ropes. It appears that often a non stretch rope on the skier end is being attached to a stretchy poly rope on the pylon end for hand passes. What details can you share? Are you using slalom rope sections? What kind of knot is used to connect them?
  19. Hi, I am what you might call an intermediate trick skier - started about 2 years ago, competed in collegiate tournaments. I can consistently put up about 660-740 pts in a tournament, sometimes more. My question is about the wileys trick wrap vs the slalom wrap. I've always used the trick wrap but lately its been somewhat frustrating to only be able to go about 10 minutes before my foot starts cramping. I don't really want to spend the money on a hardshell setup just yet, so I was looking into putting on a slalom wrap instead. Are their major cons to doing this? Is it more of a preference thing? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
  20. I'm currently on a 42" quantum and wanting to go to a 43" in either a radar or quantum. I love my quantum and want to get another one, but I also want to try a radar. No clue how the radar skis and flips. just wondered what yall thought.
  21. Hello! I want to learn how to do rtwbb but no one on my team knows how to do it. I would be very happy if you guys can teach me how to do rtwbb!
  22. Looking at the videos of a training session aftwards and check the timing of trick runs via the videos also works, but it seems more fun and direct to do it on the water. I couldn't find anything to just buy and use. But a few weeks ago I bumped into this little device, which works on 12V: Its program 2 mode is perfect for this and its accurate enough: 20.0 seconds. Its easy to get it, at least here in Europe, from China for less than 15 dollars; I ordered two for 12 euros. And it works great; I built a prototype to test if a 12V powerled, without beep, would already be enough. It sure is as the test confirmed, but its probably more fun to add a beep. That gives this wiring: So the operator (and probably also the skier, its a loud beep) can hear when the clock starts to tick (confirming they effectively pressed the button - and giving the skier the opportunity to instruct the operators afterwards on timing). I'll add a switch for the beep though, it might be too disturbing or annoying. Nice to use in the beginning, and turn off when the operator is skilled enough. Anyway, I'm quite happy with the results so far, and now I'm left struggling with connecting it to the boat electric system. For the prototype I just connected it to the battery. I see three options: 1 - just give it its own little battery and reload that once and a while. 2 - hardwire it directly to the boat battery (including a fuse) 3 - add a cigarette lighter plug to the dash of my 1997 ski nautique and use that to connect the device. Option 3 seems most elegant. Option 1 makes it portable to other boats and usable on shore as well. But I'm hesitant to drill a hole in the dash for a cigarette lighter plug and I'm unsure how to connect it to the dash wiring. I would appreciate any tips on that: Can I just connect it to 2 connectors of the ignition (a 3 connector plug)? Drilling a hole in the dash unproblematic? Any tips much appreciated!
  23. Trying to learn trick skiing ( … at my age =0/ ) It is time to start to learn offside Back Wrap. Grateful for some learning steps Background. My tricks are now: -SS, R -Back-Front, R -O reverse O (sometimes). -Wake 180 Back wrap to Front. -Wake 180 Front to Back Wrap. I can ski Back Wrap and regular Back as long as I want. Crossing wakes in back position are far from stable but slowly getting better. Can prepare for a wrapped WO but not make the trick. It is a bit hard to ski in that position a longer time. Try to glide over the wake without air and unwrap. Training on Step over Line. Can easily lift the leg over the rope but get stuck in SS position and I am also bending my waist and fall. It is hard to find a release person for Toes but I can now put on the harness and ski as long as I want. When I turn back I bend my waist and fall. When I train I normally perform all my safe tricks a few times and then my harder tricks. In the end I try a few wrapped WO or Steps.
  24. I’m looking for some feedback on my heel side flip. I’m getting more consistent at skiing away from this trick but I’m butt-checking the landing on all of my “successful” attempts this season. I can see that I tend to be back-foot heavy off the wake but I try so hard and see very little improvement in terms of that. Would love to hear a few things that I could go think about during this trick that might clean it up.
  25. Thanks to Chip Shand for making this excellent video trick timer program. I loved it on my old computer. I got a new computer and struggled to find it. So here's an easy to find link. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/a9jxyo89e8wqf2b/AACp9wL05DYoxJsuoC0YahHpa?dl=0 Easy to use with Windows 10. Eric
