  1. In my experience skiing with Mike Syderhoud in Shasta in 94 and 95 was integral in the development of the knowledge and skills that I’d developed over the previous few years working with another excellent skiing mind and coach David Spencer. A year later in 96 I resumed working with David and continued to build knowledge and skills. Looking back on that time it seems clear to me now that these excellent coaches were also going through an evolution in their processes as their knowledge grew and they adapted to the impacts on skiers by the changes in equipment. For me these coaches, the changes in equipment and hours and hours of studying the West Coast video led to real breakthroughs for me. Over the past couple years, now 15 to 20 or so years later I’m happy to continue evolving my knowledge and skills, however incrementally, with the latest equipment and the lineage of excellent coaching with Terry Winter aka @twhisper.
  2. Here’s an example from Swimming NSW Swim League...

Swimmers are first categorised by age e.g. Junior (9-12 yrs) or Seniors (13yrs+) and then allocated a division based on swimming ability. For example, an 18-yr-old boy who can swim 50 m Freestyle in 24 secs will be placed in Senior Division 1, while a 14-yr-old girl who can swim 50 m Freestyle in 33 secs will be placed in Senior Division 2. A 10-yr-old girl that can swim 50 m Freestyle in 31 secs will be placed in Junior Division 1 and a 11-yr-old boy who can swim 50 m Freestyle in 38 secs will be placed in Junior Division 3.

  3. Great topic. As kid growing up at the south Jersey shore In Somers Point I spent a lot of time on the bay and creeks fishing and crabbing with my dad and grand-mom. I was first drawn into skiing by watching the Wide World of Sports and seeing Wayne Grimwidch and the other stars of the day. In the summer of 1974 a friend bought a used 13 ft Whaler with a 20 hp Johnson and a pair of Cypress Gardens Bronco Combos and we learned to ski on the open water of Great Egg Harbor Bay. Later that summer I bought a used MFG Corvette II with a 40 hp Evinrude and a pair of no name wooden combos. The next fall, freshman year in high school I found the AWSA information in the school library index and have been a member ever since. The next summer I traded the 40 hp for 60 hp, got up on one ski for the first time and my life was changed forever... So family ties, friendships and boating interests pretty much took over at that point. By my early 20’s fitness and targeted training for skiing came into focus. At 29 I decided to drive to Jimmy Durhams Ski School in South Carolina to learn to ski the course and have been hooked ever since. From there things continued to blossom, Spencer’s Training Camp in NY, moved to CA and skied with Syderhoud and the Berkeley crew. Then moved back east and for the past 20+ years have been blessed to share the sport with my wife and kids, ski at sites all over the Northeast and train at a special pond with an awesome crew. In other words, water skiing rocks!
  4. Grew up skiing in salt and brackish water 15+ years. No problem, didn’t notice any difference other than it was easier on the palms. Just make sure to rinse with fresh water after.

Once I got started skiing on freshwater lakes I heard people talking about this water feels fast, feels slow, adjust this for this and that. To me the feeling of fast and slow has more to do with the skier’s path (wide vs narrow), and the distance of the skiers path from the shoreline. If the shoreline is close and runs parallel to the skiers path things feel fast to me. I never adjusted the ski for that.
