  3. Thank you Razorskier1 for you donation! As a Junior at the University I have seen the team develop and understand how hard it is to keep a college team afloat. This team has definitely defined my college experience and grown my love for skiing greatly. I have seen many great skiers come out of our team and it is my hope that many more in the future will be able to reach their full potential!
  4. Hello all, I am the President of the University of Iowa Waterski and Wakeboard Team and our contract with our sponsor has concluded and left us without a boat. We have set up a GOFUNDME in order to raise the funds needed to purchase a boat of our own that we can pass on to future members! Link can be found below. Anything helps, Thank You. gofundme.com
  5. Wow, it's great to see all a post about the collegiate version of our fine sport get this much attention on Ball Of Spray. We're looking forward to seeing some of our BOS friends at the event both on the water and to help out our officiating staff when they're back on shore. We're looking forward to a great event and we'll try and get a post tournament update in here at the end of the weekend!
  6. Well, still not quite in the real world and enjoying some of the best years of our lives, the college kids of NCWSA and the University of Iowa Water Ski and Wakeboard Team are getting ready for Collegiate All-Stars this coming weekend (May 16-17) at PITS in Decatur, IL. For anyone who doesn't know, this is arguably the second largest collegiate ski event of the season behind nationals as it is the only other event to bring skiers from all regions together. We will have Team Midwest vs Team East vs Team West vs Team South Central with the top 10 skiers men's and women's in each event. Kicking off Saturday morning with Men's Slalom followed by Women's Slalom then Men's Trick , Women's Trick followed by a meet the regions dinner and good old party time on site saturday night. Sunday starting again bright and early finishing off with Men's and Women's Jump before sending everyone home to enjoy the summer. Special thanks to Dean Chappell and the members of the PITS ski club, and our fine officiating crew! Special Congratulations to all qualifying Team Midwest Skiers (we're a little biased since it's our region)!
  7. I think there are quite a few of us who would seriously consider skiing behind a plane. Unfortunately with the hail storm that hit us mid day saturday I think there would have been some pretty nasty accidents. Around 3:00 in the afternoon Saturday we got hit by 30-40mph winds, rain so heavy you couldn't see the other side of a ski lake, lightning so close that there wasn't a gap for the thunder, and 10 minutes of hail. The cell was hitting us for over a half hour and when it was done the lake was up over 4 inches.
  8. No, the planes part is an early morning typo. It's possible that BOS discussions shouldn't be started on <10 hours of sleep over a weekend. @eleeski‌, well, if those viewing are interested in the off the water team exploits as well as the on the water cheering section... Alumni tailgate/parents weekend is right around the Holloween Weekend (I'll check what that date is exactly and get back to you) and I believe we have our annual sit-in set in early October as well. For ballers who weren't collegiate midwest skiers, the sit in is a version of a bar crawl, the difference is that we don't believe in wasting any time walking from one bar to the next and would rather find one we like, set up drink and food specials, and then stay there from open to close. Elections for the team will be happening shortly so I (Mitch Ross, @RazorRoss3‌) won't be talking to you through this account the next president of the team should and of course you can find me through my personal BOS tag as well. We'll do our best to keep all of our BOS fans well informed of our coming events and fundraisers as we go!
  9. Wow, what a weekend! Saturday started out with a 10 mph head wind off the dock that built to 15 plus by the end of the day, we saw Team President Mitch Ross Breeze his way through 5@32 off for a 1st place Slalom finish, as well as frequent 3 event medalist Neilan Cassidy going out ad ripping through his opener and scroring buoys at 32mph 15 off in what was then a big tail wind. The conditions proved to be too much for some of our less experienced slalom skiers but all teams found they had the same issue. On the Jump lake we had a valiant effort put forth by new members who just narrowly missed being able walk away with their first landed jump, long time show skier Marissa Cardella and team Treasurer Ali Engelhardt were both able to ride away through the wind for Team Iowa. Following that we moved on to Men's and Women's trick, on the men's side; new member Matthew Roozeboome (we can't pronounce that either) scored 140 points on his wakeboard in his first A team appearance, senior and legacy Austin Marshal came in with 100 points on a wakeboard, Mitch Ross and Neilan Cassidy, continuing their good day came in 8th and 6th respectively with 740 and 920 points. On the ladies side, Ashley Collins came in with 20 points in her first A team appearance catching an edge on her attemped Front Back, and Team VP Bailey Krstic skied away with 200 points leading the team on the Women's side. At the end of day 1 Iowa was resting in 9th place, 40 point ahead of Nebraska and 9 teams move on to Regionals. Mens Jump started off with Neilan Cassidy who had been hoping 1st round would go on Saturday and struggled on his 3/4 cuts in a 15-20 mph cross wind but still put a 76ft leap in the books, he wanted to beat his 105 best. After that, Henry Hartzler landed a 43 ft ride over in the tail wind but struggled on his single wake cuts missing his 55 ft pb, Silas Tappendorf landed his first jump of the year witha 35 ft ride over, and Mitch Ross powered through his last event with a 1 ft pb of 70 ft. On the women's side of the lake, all teams were struglling to fight the 15 mph tail wind off the dock, Marrissa Cardella missed her gates unfortunately, while new member Julia Everitt, Treasurer Ali Engelhardt, and VP Bailey Krstic all walked away with a frustrated 1/2 buoy in the wind. At the end of day two The University of Iowa Waterski and Wakeboard Team had one Gold Medal Finish in Men's Slalom, a few pbs and tournament pbs by various members, more cuts beats and bruises combined than we care to count, but had unfortunately lost our placement to the women's slalom team of Nebraska. For the first year since 2011 we will not be making the trip out to Decatur, IL for the regional tournament but wish our friends and competitors on the other Great Planes Conference Teams the best of luck! Mitch Ross President: University of Iowa Waterski and Wakeboard Team
  10. This last Tuesday we took a student reporter out on the boat with us for a sunrise set out on the Coralville Reservoir with a nice 4:30 wakeup call so we could be back before our classes started up. Combined with some interviews by team members the story she put together of us got a 2 minute long time slot on the 9:00PM Dailey Iowa News Show. While it's no TGas on a 5 hour energy commercail, it's always fun to see our sport on TV. Here is the link to the video, our 2 minute spot comes in around the 10:55 time mark.
  11. We brought plenty of warm clothes and even skied half decent! What a great site and what great conditions. Looking forward to the Great Planes Conference Championship this Weekend!
  12. This last weekend our team hosted our annual fall tournament at Eagle Lake in Evansdale Iowa. We saw a pb jump by Neilan Cassidy of 105ft, a 3rd place finish by Mitch Ross in slalom with 3.5@28 (he wasn't happy with it but the team was) numerous good scores from returning members and some surprises from new members landing jumps, running buoys, and getting tricks often after never trying these events before. A big thank you goes out to Dave Clark, Pat Cook, Corrie Nelson and her husband Todd, as well as the waterhawks show ski team, the student officials and the Iowa team skiers for helping us put on a great event! (And of course the ski gods for giving us 2 days of high 70's and calm winds!) -Mitch Ross President, Unicersity of Iowa Waterski Team
  13. A split conference between the East and Midwest would be an interesting concept, spring is a little funny for most of the Midwest teams though since many times our first tournament is the first time any of us have hit the water. Spring comes late to many up here. The idea that team Midwest is competitive at all stars is still a mystery.
  14. @MattP, we might, it's a long drive to get down there but then again there were seven six of us who trekked down to Louisiana for a spring break at Bennett's so we can't say we haven't made long drives before! Always great to make new friends in the ski world.
  15. @MattP, when it comes to team Midwest we don't have the spring season to be able to put up qualifying scores until Fall season, most of us go to All stars on next to no skiing. @6balls, since we know you are among our valued alumni, we still are the ultimate wind warriors in the conference. Great Planes Conference Championship 2012 hosted at the Dream Lakes site was a 15+ quartering head tail and as we know there is little wind protection on that site. Team placed third because of the lack of skiers who practice in the questionable conditions that define collegiate skiing.
  16. First place in slalom goes to a trick skier running buoys at 30 mph 15 off and all the guys who run into 32 off full speed miss their openers. Second place goes to a guy on Jumpers Third place goes to a normally 32 off skier who got 5 buoys on a missed opener. I guess that's what happens when no one has skied all year and we all decide to show up at a tournament anyways. Looking forward to our home tournament this weekend assuming the Cedar River doesn't flood.
  17. @MattP‌, it is definitely a challenge. Any collegiate skier would likely also agree that the nights at a collegiate tournament (particularly around Team Midwest) are more than most greek life boys and girls can keep up with.
  18. That would be a beautiful thing indeed. Smooth water, low boat traffic. A little farther away but for the vast improvement in conditions I don't think anyone would complain. Unfortunately we're kind of stuck with what we have.
  19. @MS, we've been practicing for over a week now, our problem is that the water level isn't high enough at our marina launch to put our boat (or course) in the water so just open water slalom and jump. Fortunately all you need for trick is water. Thank goodness the Coralville Reservoir has 800 boat ramps on it! @BlueSki, I don't think it's as much keeping the women's team happy with the men's behavior as much as just getting them on the team. Our new member meetings earned us 6+ new members (more than are graduating which is nice) but more men than women. I doubt the women who do join are complaining much though, good ratio for them.
  20. The bikini thing is pretty effective for getting guys to come out and ski, doesn't work as well on the women though. As anyone who skied collegiate knows, what a team needs to succeed is a men's team that can hold par and a strong women's team.
  21. That's an interesting thought but currently we do not. We send out a mass email to all University of Iowa email accounts that they receive a day or two before our new member meetings, we also get a permit to have our boat on the T. Anne Cleary walkway for 2-4 hours both meeting days where we hand out flyers to the students walking through.
  22. As a team we like to double up the recruitment efforts because while significantly more people join in the fall it is still a busy time and especially so for freshmen trying to figure out college life. Every fall, shortly before the tournaments start up, we will typically have our boat on the walkway in front of the business building two days in a row advertising new member meetings and again in the spring once we take the boat out of storage and the weather starts warming up.
  23. Yep, she may have fallen from her former beauty but she still ran, could pull skiers, and was very nice to have for some dirty work like putting the course in that we wouldn't have wanted to do with the 09 Pro Star. We had the Pro Star on Campus today advertising our spring recruitment meetings tonight and tomorrow, hoping for a big turnout!
  24. Iowa hit the coralville reservoir for the first time since last October. Feels good to be at it again! @BraceMaker‌, the moomba was sold last fall to a group of Iowa ski alumni in Colorado.
