Baller DkLkSkr Posted September 21, 2022 Baller Share Posted September 21, 2022 Have a 2017 Malibu with the PCM 409 6L engine. Got a low fuel pressure warning that only comes on when at full throttle. No loss of power when pulling skier up or maintaining 34 or 36 mph. Around 730 hours on the engine. Thoughts on why this is only happening at full throttle? Fuel pump issue, fuel filter, or fuel pressure regulator? Would this be hard to fix diy? Baller LK_skier Posted September 21, 2022 Baller Share Posted September 21, 2022 blockage? have you changed the fuel filter in the fuel control cell - thats easy and cheap to try before anything else.
Baller jpwhit Posted September 21, 2022 Baller Share Posted September 21, 2022 In my experience, if you have an inline filter between the tank and FCC, that always get blocked up before the filter in the FCC. I'd start by changing that. Have you put a pressure gauge on it to see what the fuel pressure is doing? There should be a Schrader valve on the fuel rail on the top of the engine to attach a manual fuel pressure gauge.
Baller DkLkSkr Posted September 21, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted September 21, 2022 I don't believe that there is a FCC on this particular engine. I did see that online and looked for it and can not find one if there is one.
Baller DkLkSkr Posted October 18, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted October 18, 2022 Could octane level cause this type of engine code? I'm using the manufacture recommended level, but would premium cause this to go away?

Baller 2Valve Posted October 18, 2022 Baller Share Posted October 18, 2022 You need to check fuel pressure with a gauge at full throttle. Premium or Regular fuel should have no effect on fuel pressure.

Baller Adam Caldwell Posted October 18, 2022 Baller Share Posted October 18, 2022 @DkLkSkr I would put my money on the filters on the bottom of the fuel pump assembly in the tank are clogged up and too restrictive. We had that issue around 500hrs on our boat at TL. Someone used a siphon hose that was full of sand and severely contaminated the tank. I just cleaned tank, swapped filters and we now have over 3000hrs on it.If you do some digging on the internet you can find replacement filters pretty cheap. Other option is to replace the entire fuel pump assembly but that can get super pricey.

Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted October 18, 2022 Baller_ Share Posted October 18, 2022 The FCC canister facilitates both the low pressure fuel pump as well as the high pressure fuel pump. seen in the past where gradew build up on the screen behind the inlet fitting of the low pressure pump, had to remove entire module from engine to inspect, remove inlet fitting and blow out lower portion of fuel low pressure pump. there is a o ring under the hose fitting so don't destroy it or loose. Baller DkLkSkr Posted October 19, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted October 19, 2022 @adamhcaldwell I am thinking that is likely the scenario too. Do you know the part number by chance? Is it the Fuel pump fuel filter sock?

Baller ResponseSkier Posted October 20, 2022 Baller Share Posted October 20, 2022 @DkLkSkr Yes, it is called a fuel filter sock. The fuel pump assembly has two "socks" on the bottom that are easy to change. I have done them on my TXi. I think I bought these: https://www.bakesonline.com/engine/fuel-system/fuel-pump-filter-kit-for-in-tank-fuel-pump.html

Baller DkLkSkr Posted October 27, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted October 27, 2022 @ResponseSkier @adamhcaldwell when you changed the sock filters on the bottom of the fuel pump, was there a third filter on the inside bottom of the pump? I changed the two on the bottom outside, but noticed another on the inside bottom.... Doesn't look like it does much of anything.
Baller ResponseSkier Posted October 28, 2022 Baller Share Posted October 28, 2022 @DkLkSkr yes, there is a third filter within the pump housing, but I did not change that one as it looked much more difficult. It would stand to reason that the two on the bottom of the pump would be more susceptible to clogging.
Baller Adam Caldwell Posted October 28, 2022 Baller Share Posted October 28, 2022 @DkLkSkr - yeah I was able to replace the third one as well. If for nothing else, while you have it apart you could always pull it off and clean and back flush it and re-install.
Baller DkLkSkr Posted October 29, 2022 Author Baller Share Posted October 29, 2022 @adamhcaldwell is that just another sock filter or a completely different one?
Baller Adam Caldwell Posted October 29, 2022 Baller Share Posted October 29, 2022 On mine it was another sock filter, just was smaller with a different geometry
