Baller MISkier Posted February 18, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2019 I got this video link from @Rook today. This is from Shreveport. Bob LaPoint and Kris LaPoint in the finals and into -39 and record territory. Great skiing. I don't know if anyone has posted this here before, but I thought it was cool to see how big skiing was back then. Some other interesting things: 15,000 people $25,000 offered for anyone breaking the record Check out the enthusiasm and reaction of the crowd Hand timing Some jumpers without helmets Quote The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears. Baller Wish Posted February 18, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2019 Love the red boats. So what's $25,000 in today's dollars. Sad that our current crop of athletes don't get that kind of money or crowds. Great vid to watch. Thanks for posting.
Baller Cooper_Trelawney Posted February 18, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 18, 2019 I think I was in 8th grade then...reading Spray and World Waterskiing and idolizing these skiers. I skied on Champion Lake a few times back in the day. Great skiing conditions but super humid and oh yeah, don't stop into a fire ant mound! Baller 6balls Posted February 19, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2019 Super cool...two icons head to head, who happen to be brothers, who both held world titles, skiing right up to the world record level.

Baller MDB1056 Posted February 19, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2019 WAY cool old video. Champs of my time. Was no better time to be skiing. boats & equipment may be much better today, but there was no better time for the sport. As noted above, crowds, enthusiasm, money, etc. So blessed to have experienced it. THANK YOU @MISkier for posting it! Into 39 almost 40 years ago - that's raw skiing. Baller mfjaegersr Posted February 19, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 19, 2019 Indeed, thanks for posting @MISkier.This vid is awesome! The LaPoints made their mark on me in 1986.; I'll post my story in another thread.
gregy
I think Robert Pigozzi's was studying LaPointe videos (or trained by) for gates.

DangerBoy
@Zman is the ski that BL is using in the video the one you have?
Baller Bruce_Butterfield Posted February 23, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 23, 2019 One thing that struck me was the age, and the perceptions of the skier's ages vs today. Ricky McCormick was 30 and considered the grandfather planning to retire. Both Karen Roberge and Sammy were 19 and on top of the pack. Damn I feel old. Baller lpskier Posted February 23, 2019 Baller Share Posted February 23, 2019 I’m surprised no one has commented about KLP almost ending up inside the jump ramp. Quote Lpskier

Members whitem71
Wow. Few things which struck me too - KLP’s reverse grip for slalom (I thought only Mike Hazelwood did that), lack of helmets for jump and how short the jump skis were, Ricky retiring at 30 due to old age, Carl’s moustache ?, how flat that water was (!), and finally what about that slalom technique....arms up in the air, bent at the waist and I’m guessing they were 65/6 inch skis for the men.. Edbrazil
Wow. Thanks for posting. The first Shreveport tournament that I worked, and pre Pro Tour, which started in 1984. My name was even mentioned as one of the key officials. This was my first Shreveport pro tournament before many others.

Baller disland Posted March 25, 2019 Baller Share Posted March 25, 2019 No helmets, I was scared watching it. Also Sammy looked like he was going to lose the right tip on every jump
Baller MDB1056 Posted April 1, 2019 Baller Share Posted April 1, 2019 KLP has always had reversed grip. Works well!
