jcamp
Anyone dig a lake under power lines or know a site like that?
Baller MISkier Posted January 13, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2019 @jcamp, here is an image of a lake (old gravel pit) in South Lyon, MI. The electrical towers are circled in red and the power line path is indicated in red lines. Seems like it can be done or has been done. Quote The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears. Baller buoyboy1 Posted January 13, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2019 My lake has a power line over it and I know several other lakes with them. Need to make sure the poles that support the line are well past the edge of the lake. Check with local power company in your area to see if they would have any other concerns. jcamp
@buoyboy1 How much buffer do you have between the poles and the edge of the water? Thanks.
Baller LoopSki Posted January 13, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2019 Here a a few pics of a lake i used to ski at.
lcarnes
Our lake has a large power line over it. We asked the power company to add a pole to create more clearance over the water. Not sure what would have happened if we had splashed the old line - but have had no problems with it since they raised it.
Baller lpskier Posted January 14, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2019 I believe Lake Lou in Maryland ceased operations after the power company (that may have owned the lake) installed a power line across the lake. The lake I skied on for 40 + years has power and phone lines under it. Quote Lpskier
Baller buoyboy1 Posted January 15, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2019 @jcamp The closest pole is 50' to edge of water but I have seen them 25' or so. Keep in mind that the shallow slope along the shore adds a lot of material quickly as you move out into the lake.
Edbrazil
The site of the 1973 Nationals in Petersburg, VA had power lines over it. And, power poles in the water. Poles were eventually removed. I don't think the site is in current skiing use.
Baller ALPJr Posted January 15, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2019 We boated, skied and fished for many years near the Beesleys Point power plant at the mouth of the Great Egg Harbor River and Bay estuary. Many - power lines above and towers in the water. Not sure how the New Jersey laws may regulate skiing in that area now.
Baller liquid d Posted January 15, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2019 Power lines are no problem to ski around...take it from me!
Baller BraceMaker Posted January 15, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2019 If digging a new place I'd bet title research and survey should give you the necessary info to determine easement for the tower/lines
Bill22
Off topic; @Edbrazil I think the Petersburg site was located where now is a drag strip. They built a land bridge through the middle of the lake so people camping could have a shorter walk to the track. I work at a power plant but I who knows what they do with the power once it leaves here? :)
akale15
@jcamp the N lake at Twin Oaks Lakes in Paducah, KY has a notch out for a utility pole, with power lines running over a portion of the lake. I used to ski at this site...it was also the site of the 2018 Southern Regionals.
Members Dsully
I would worry more about the actual digging process so equipment does make contact. Make sure there are not any easements that the power company MAY have for that line to do maintenance.
Baller skierjp Posted January 15, 2019 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2019 The power company will have easements for their structures. Not only around the structures but between the spans of poles and or towers.
