Baller Cnewbert Posted September 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 I am looking for an active ski club or a ski group within a hour (or so) of Ocala, FL, or for that matter, anyone looking for an additional skier to drive/ski/observe and contribute to operating expenses. Slalom course greatly desired. Let me know!
Baller MillerTime38 Posted September 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 It’s more like an hour and a half but I ski east of lake city, have a course and an 01 nautique.
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 1, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 Hi MillerTime38, can you let me know more specifics on the location where you ski? I could look up the drive time on Google Driving Directions. I assume that by responding you are open to having another skier join you. How often do you ski? Thanks! Baller DavidN Posted September 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 I think the closest to Ocala would be Jack Travers in Groveland. They offer a variety of packages including a club membership with discounted ski sets w/ or w/o coaching. Check them out @ jacktravers.com
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 1, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 Thanks DavidN, yes, I've checked them out previously. They are acceptably close. I have contacted them but haven't heard back yet. I expect I will soon however. Thanks again.
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 1, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 But I'm also thinking there might be just a small group of avid skiers -- not a commercial operation -- that might be open to having another skier join them and share expenses. I had that opportunity last year but the boat owner sold his lake house and moved to CA, unfortunately. It was sweet while it lasted!
Baller DavidN Posted September 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 If you are willing to travel all the way to Clermont, shoot me a message.
Baller Orlando76 Posted September 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 Hey Chris, spoke to you a few weeks ago. I’m looking for a person to get me back into skiing here in Mt Dora or wherever we can sneak a course in without too much hassle. We have two partially abandoned ones on the chain and one in my garage.
Baller MillerTime38 Posted September 1, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2018 @Cnewbert the lake is called ocean pond it is in the osceola national forest. I ski on average 1-2 times per week and it is just my wife and I that use the course. Weekdays we have the lake to ourselves since school back in and weekend you have to ski early
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 2, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 2, 2018 DavidN, I sent you a message on this forum. Hopefully you got it.
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 2, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 2, 2018 Orlando76, I remember our discussion. I sent you a PM on Aug 20, but I never heard back. I’m not sure you saw it but you could look it up. Anyhow, I think the hang up was that you are not available week day mornings to ski. Is that still the case?
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 2, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 2, 2018 MillerTime38, I think our posts and PMs must have crossed. Anyhow, I did answer your PM. Don’t know if you saw it. I looked up Ocean Pond. Everything sounds perfect for what I’m looking for... except the drive time appears to be a good 1.5 hours. That just wouldn’t work on a regular basis I’m afraid. But maybe one of these days I should just give it a try a see what the drive is really like. It sounds like you have a great set up! Baller thager Posted September 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2018 @Cnewbert If the difference is one of skiing or not skiing take the plunge! I live on a lake but drive an hour to ski on a private lake on a regular basis. I ski with others at least 1.5 hours away when necessary.
Baller_ MISkier Posted September 2, 2018 Baller_ Share Posted September 2, 2018 @Cnewbert, I drove an hour and forty minutes one way for 7 years, often towing my boat. Get some ski time and work on closer options later. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 2, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 2, 2018 thager, I’m with you all the way. I’m currently driving 1hr+ each way 3x weekly to ski. But the ski club has some issues and I’m looking for a better alternative, hopefully not much farther away than I already drive. If I have no luck I’ll probably stick with what I’ve got. I sure won’t stop skiing!
Baller MillerTime38 Posted September 2, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2018 @Cnewbert didn’t see your message. Come up and check it out sometime. I am gonna try and make it out one day this week and next weekend for sure

Baller Orlando76 Posted September 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 3, 2018 Yeah weekday mornings won’t work. I’m too young and dumb to retire.
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 3, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 3, 2018 MIskier, how many days a week did you do that? Anyhow, to be clear once again, I am not lacking for skiing, as I do ski 3x weekly at present. But there are some things going on with the club I ski with that I’m not thrilled about, so I’m looking for an alternative. Meanwhile, I’m continuing to ski. Baller_ MISkier Posted September 3, 2018 Baller_ Share Posted September 3, 2018 @Cnewbert, 2-3 days a week. We had ski league every Tuesday and then I would go on the weekend. Occasionally, I might add a Thursday into the mix I think the most I ever did was 4 days in a week. Work was part of the limiting factor. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears. Baller Cnewbert Posted September 3, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 3, 2018 MISkier, that's awesome! My hat's off to you. But I may be doing something similar if I can't come up with something closer to replace my current situation.
Baller Andre Posted September 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 3, 2018 It's freaking weird that most of the ''looking for partners\ski place\course\club'' threads are from Florida guys... With all the lakes, warm weather,retired-but-still-in-shape guys you would think it must be easy to find peoples to ski close by where you live. I must be missing something. My ski finish in 16.95 but my ass is out of tolerance!
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 3, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 3, 2018 Andre, what you are missing in my case is that where I live in FL there are no ski lakes particularly close by. I'm north of Ocala, the Horse Capital of the World. But the nearest ski lakes are at least 1 hour away, and the epicenter of FL skiing, Orlando, is 1.5+ away. That would require 3+ hours of driving each ski day. I'm presently driving 2+ hours 3x weekly to ski, and I'm hoping not to extend that by much if I find a new group to ski with. Baller MillerTime38 Posted September 3, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 3, 2018 @Andre you are missing something, Florida is not just Orlando and south, Jacksonville area there is only one tournament lake within 2 1/2 hours and they don’t take new members, trust me I have tried but there are some nice people skiing there that invite me out once in a while. Only place I have been able to find is an hour drive on a public lake with a floating course. People are shocked when I told them we got a permit. Gets the job done but when living in dallas I had 4 lakes within an hour and they all welcomed new members......
Baller liquid d Posted September 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 4, 2018 Bring back Lake Wauberg in Gainesville...U of F Ski Team? Used to have to chase the gators away from the jump to start a tourney.

Baller Cnewbert Posted September 4, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 4, 2018 liquid d, so what is the deal with Lake Wauberg? We’ve driven by it dozens of times and seen the jump, but we’ve never seen any activity on the lake. I’ve always wondered about it.
Baller Cnewbert Posted September 4, 2018 Author Baller Share Posted September 4, 2018 Thanks Lelani. I’ve had several emails with Chris and she told me to call you, which I intend to.
Baller Orlando76 Posted September 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 4, 2018 I’ve skied a few times with a Farrier from Belleview who drives to mid Orlando every morning to ski. I couldn’t even get my old partner to drive to the other side of the lake, “just too far”.
Baller liquid d Posted September 4, 2018 Baller Share Posted September 4, 2018 @Cnewbert It was the College's ski site back in the day. But if there is still a jump on it (and it's maintained), I'd ask around. I haven't been there since college (Go UCF!). The slalom course was on the far side.
