If I recall correctly, the driver noticed the boat disconnecting from the vehicle, jumped out and into the boat to do whatever, and left the vehicle to continue down the ramp after the boat.

The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.

@skialex certainly no safety chains.

Jack is not deployed or failed.

My guess has always been that the guy was backing the boat down the ramp touched the brakes the tongue weight came off and it jumped the hitch. The driver probably thought he threw it in park as he jumped out to look.

Explain that one to the insurance adjuster.

My truck got sideswiped

OK, was the driver of the other vehicle at fault?

Yeah, you could say that

OK, so do you have the contact info for this person?

Yeah... It was me

(checks policy for other car) OK, so you have a Mazda CX5 on your policy. Is there any damage to that?

No, the Mazda is fine. I was driving my boat...

...

...

...

BTW I need to file a claim on my boat.

@ScarletArrow They do. We had a tuber being pulled by a Sea Doo that slammed into an aluminum dock at a very high rate I’d speed, alcohol was involved. Dead on impact, he was the adult son in law of the Sea Doo operator. Lake house went on the market that week. Not sure if his daughter ever forgave him.

Many years ago a football player at the University of Alabama was paralyzed in a tubing incident. It’s a shame that people are injured but when you throw caution to the wind and add alcohol serious injuries occur.

@skinut to answer your question, here are the most common things I see on a regular basis

- Incorrect height drop/rise hitch

- No transom tie downs

- No bow eye safety cable/chain/strap

- Incorrect, poor condition or under inflated trailer tires

- Undersized tow vehicle

- Driving behavior

Combine a few of the above and you have a very expensive insurance claim waiting to happen.
