ellenm
I am considering replacing my 2002 Nautique engine with a new one and zero off vs selling and getting a newer boat. My current engine is carbureted and I'm having trouble selling it. Does anyone know what that might run me and if I can sell my old engine? The engine is in great shape and only has 600 hours for a 2002.
Baller BrennanKMN Posted September 16, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2016 You're better off selling and buying a new boat. With the price of ZO boats falling fast the cost effectiveness of a ZO conversion is just not there anymore. Plus if you ever go to sell your boat after the conversion you will not recoup the costs. Baller Orlando76 Posted September 16, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2016 And I was looking for a SN newer than 97 that was carb'd. If you like the boat, re power it. Buying used you never know if you're buying somebody else's headache. With a new ZO conversion you know what you have and selling the old motor will probably be easier than you expect. Baller_ MISkier Posted September 16, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted September 16, 2016 How did there get to be a carbureted engine in a 2002 boat? I thought those were gone in 1994. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller keithh2oskier Posted September 16, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2016 @MISkier Nautique offered Carb'd 351s until 99' I think. I have a 02 196 with a FI 5.0 engine. I think a GT40 and the 330 were the engine options in 02.
Baller BraceMaker Posted September 16, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 16, 2016 @MISkier - interests me as well - however I have seen quite a few MEFI 1-3 boats swapped to carbs when owners couldn't troubleshoot or repair MEFI/Sensor issues. ellenm
The boat had 40 hours on it when I bought it, so I think it was the option the owner wanted at the time it was purchased.
Baller LeonL Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 @BrennanKMN I haven't really noticed the "price of ZO boats falling fast". Based on a couple of '07's recently mentioned on here.
Baller motoskier Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 Doug Moss (best mechanic ever) did a re-power for me last year on my 2000 SN, works absolutely perfect. Boat skis better than any new boat (almost too good), I am super happy and saved about $15000 over buying a used ZO boat
collier_shotz
@motoskier Can you let us know: what was in it; what did you put in it; why; what did it cost; and where can one find Doug? Thanks!
spicoli
I think that 02 is probably a 5.3 chevy I might be wrong but by 02 ford pulled out of pcm.
Baller LeonL Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 In '02 you might see both Chevy and Ford. The majority were GT40, very few Chevys. The ones that were Chevys were 5.7. No 5.3 until 2016, to the best of my knowledge.
Baller dvskier Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 @LeonL is agree, 5.3 did not appear until 2016. Ran out of GT-40's in 2002.
Baller_ MISkier Posted September 17, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted September 17, 2016 Didn't they have the 5.0 GM engines in some boats? The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller dvskier Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 Correct, a bit sluggish in the course.
Baller rawly Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 There is an Excalibur 343 engine for sale on Ski It Again for around 3K . That is the motor that you want . Some of the lucky guys got them in their 02's long before ZO was around . Skip Dunlap is selling it . He is a very reputable Nautique guy . Baller Orlando76 Posted September 17, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 17, 2016 Yeah the 5.0 GM's weren't uncommon.
Baller_ Jody_Seal Posted September 18, 2016 Baller_ Share Posted September 18, 2016 By 2002 the Gt40 /5.8-351W was an option package and it's last year. Standard engine was the first generation Excalibur chevy sbc /5.7-350. Also a throttle body 5.0 proski chevy 305 ci was a engine option in the ski nautiques. Other engine options for other models in the Nautique line were 8.1 Python and the first of the 6.0 LS engines.
Baller oldjeep Posted September 18, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 18, 2016 Be interesting to see a picture of this carb. Wouldn't be the first time I'd seen someone call a throttle body a carb.
Baller Fast351 Posted September 19, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 19, 2016 That's what I was thinking too...
Baller keithh2oskier Posted September 19, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 19, 2016 I have the 5.0 Chevy 305 in my 02 Nautique 196. I am smaller (150#) and cannot tell the difference skiing behind my 196 or a buddies 04 with the Excalibur. I pull one guy who weighs 200+ and it takes all its got to get him up but once underway it doesnt seem to be an issue.
Baller motoskier Posted September 20, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 20, 2016 Doug Moss is in California and has done many re powers (does it in one day). He did my 2000 SN two years ago, works unbelievably well. You can not tell it was not a factory install, (he also added the ZO ). Sold my GT40 for $3300.00 had about 800 hrs. We used the Excalibur 343. The only problem is that the wake is so good it makes some of the new boats feal hard, I tend to ski a little flat at times.Good luck
Baller 6balls Posted September 20, 2016 Baller Share Posted September 20, 2016 If someone could do this nearby I'd do it.
