Bringing Clarity To The Term "Smear"

@Wish most long line skiers don't generate the angle that Jason does out of the buoy. If they did they wouldn't be long line skiers they would be capable of running short line.

I totally agree the objective is to create speed early and enable an earlier edge change. I don't believe most long line skiers do that and can make the early edge change.

Very cool to see the different flips in between each ball.

Ya know I see the humor in this thread and all the other threads that joke about "Smear" but I have sort of a chip on my shoulder about it. Yes @ozski it is funny.

The definition that I heard first was very much of "ah ha moment" for me. For anyone who is yearning for knowledge and reading this forum to actually learn something - the meaning (as I understand it) is totally lost. Makes me want to bring back "Advanced Topics".

the hardest thing about slaloming on a trick ski is slowing it down enough to turn after the wake. the only two ways i know of for doing that are to do 1 or 2 *s* turns out by the ball or to half side slide / half carve into the turn until the ski slows down enough to crank it the other direction. the second description is what hes doing in that video.

@Colebrah You always has some smear in your path to apex but I showed how to induce a lot of smear. Everyone has some smear or "over steer" between edge change and apex. @Chris Rossi put the idea in my head. I am not 100% sure he defines it a narrowly as I do but I have to credit him for the idea. There is an article somewhere where he explains his version.

@Horton I know you said you have a bad good side and a good bad side but "good side" and "bad side" are just so simple to understand. Why change it if it's not broken.

I have been reading BOS for +3 years and I don't know what side is toe side or heal side? If I am reading an article I should not have to google toe side to understand what is being said. (just my 2 cents from a guy who can slalom almost as good as that guy does on a trick ski) Man that's crazy!

@Bill22 heel side = on side = 2/4/6 RFF

For the record I like heel side and toe side better but have completely given up trying to promote those terms

@Horton and what is wrong with on side/off side?

I do like heel/toe side but I realize most people have to think too much about it when someone mentions it. I will say I do not like the terms good/bad side. I have been known to turn my off side much better than my on side.

@Horton - I'm not actually advocating for any specific terms. I don't really care that much. I was just being a little tongue in cheek about "having a chip".

I do have an actual chip on my shoulder about someone thinking snowboarding is somehow more fun or cool than skiing. A huge chip. Or SUP being a good way for a beginner to learn to surf. Or Chipotle being Mexican food. Or Kirkwood being better than Squaw. Those are my chips.

@jimbrake -we have always used ' on side ' and ' off side ' and will continue to do so. the nice thing about it is when you run into some guy like horton who tries to push toe side / heel side on the rest of us you can simply explain that your system references only the ' heel ' part. ' on side ' means you are *on* your heels, and ' off side ' means you are *off* your heels. doesn't leave a lot of room for rebuttal.
