Clark Carroll
Hey all, I recently was scorpioned (got hit by the tail of the board on the head) in a pretty nasty fall while crossing the wake. I've had it happen before, but this time it hurt me pretty bad because I recently got an adjustable fin ski and the fin block hit me like a sledge hammer!!! Lots of stitches! I've heard that a few years ago some of the manufacturers had a rubber block that went over the fin block to protect from this type of injury. Does anyone know who made it or if there is some type of aftermarket product I can buy? Thanks!
Baller 6balls Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 You have got to figure out what about your skiing is causing this kind of fall...it can be dangerous. There's a gal in MN that has plates in her head and barely survived such a fall. Take some video of your skiing and post it here on BOS...I'm sure you will get some good suggestions. Baller jhughes Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 Helmet?
Clark Carroll
6balls - she got hit with the fin block? She OK now? Jhughes - I've thought about a helmet, but was looking for something a little less intrusive! I wear one for wakeboarding because of jumping, but not many slalom skiers use one!!! Baller MISkier Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 We have a kid in our club that had this same fall. Many days in the hospital, a lengthy recovery, and I believe he also has a plate now. He wears a helmet now. We have other kids wearing helmets, too. But, there is something causing that particular type of fall. I have a few OTFs now and then, but I am typically flung out of the ski or execute complete flips. The scorpion result is something different altogether. The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.
Baller gregy Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 There are some really good slalom skiers wearing helmets including Joel Howley who is one of the top in the world. Its probably not a bad idea to wear a helmet. I was about 19 yrs old, I got hit right on my spine about mid way up my back by the tail of the ski, scary moment there. Baller 6balls Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 Yes she took the back of the ski to the back of the head...has some permanent deficits but great recovery considering...she has been back to skiing regularly for years now but will tell you things are not normal. I don't remember all of the details but she was in trouble for a while and really made a remarkable recovery.
packski
The only time I've personally seen that type of fall is my daughter skiing at the Nat's coming off 4 ball in incredibly good shape and boom, otf, tail of ski hit her in the back of her head. Was headed to podium until that fall. Still scratching my head on that one. Four years later and she has never had another otf.
Baller gregy Posted June 18, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 18, 2014 Someone was telling me there is a ski lake in California that requires kids to wear helmets due to a previous accident.
Chuck_Dickey
There are a number of kids in So. Cal using Gath helmets due to one death and another near death crash. They got use to them quickly and wear the every set. This brand fits snug and close to the face so it doesn't catch water and spin their heads around in a crash. Baller thager Posted June 19, 2014 Baller Share Posted June 19, 2014 Take your fin box off ski and cover with masking tape. Dip portion you want covered in Plasti Dip. let dry then repeat until thickness desired. Peal off fin box, trim and replace fin box in ski. Place new plasti -cover back on fin box.
