webbdawg99
The original "paint job" was bc I really didnt like having a white ski. I was used to a black ski and the white was almost distracting to me. But then it developed into something else...

Baller BraceMaker Posted March 16, 2014 Baller Share Posted March 16, 2014 @webbdawg99 - my guess is spray plasticote to keep some form of binding plate from either maring/slipping on the skis.
webbdawg99
@BraceMaker You got it. PlastiDip is the name of the product. It creates a latex-like rubber coating after you spray several coats. It is easily removed and peels off in one huge sheet if you'd like. My 2013 Quest doesn't have a single scratch on it from bindings. Its a GREAT way to protect/preserve your ski! Baller BraceMaker Posted March 16, 2014 Baller Share Posted March 16, 2014 Seen people use it on wheels before with the same reasoning.
webbdawg99
People are doing entire cars with the stuff now. It comes in multiple colors and you can get a gloss clear coat as well. And if you dont like it....peel the whole thing off!
countymountie
I like it. Does the PlatiDip prevent a slotted plate from moving on a ski? Same setup at the white Quest above.
Waternut
I'm still slightly confused why though... I mean, I've purchased 4 used ski's over the years and would have to say that the white water marks or faded graphics look far worse than a few minor scratches from the previous owners bindings...especially after I've put my bindings on. Good to have pride in your stuff and it's cool you're willing to take care of them that much but I don't really see the benefit.
webbdawg99
@countymountie It simply provides a protective layer on the ski. However, because it creates a rubber-like coating.....the surface where its applied will be much less slick than the ski....almost "grippy". @Waternut The same argument could be applied to ski socks and fin blocks..... Members SkiJay
. . . no scratches, but the potential for a nasty fade line when the PlastiDip is removed. It's hard to keep a ski out of the sun while skiing on it.
Baller ral Posted March 17, 2014 Baller Share Posted March 17, 2014 I keep the protective binding sheet in my D3's, so I get zero scratches, and also non slick surface. But even that transparent layer protects enough to generate a clear fading line. And I try to keep my skis out of the sun as much as possible. webbdawg99
Had this on my Quest last season. No fade line or trace that it was ever there. Ski looks BRAND NEW. Its for sale by the way!

Baller A_B Posted July 9, 2014 Baller Share Posted July 9, 2014 @webbdawg99 that has to add at least an ounce of weight to the ski and potentially effect the torsional flex pattern, do you make any fin adjustments for that? :)
