Baller Wish Posted January 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted January 24, 2014 So I had to put my boat on the neighbors lift for a bit of time. My lift has a cradle. His uses straps to lift the boat. I kinda figured that would put the squeeze on the rub rail so cut a foam boat guide in half and placed it between hull and strap near the rub rail. This did keep the strap off the rub rail...for a while. Then the weight crushed the boat guide over time and eventually smashed in 3" of the rub rail but mostly the front strap so near the windshield. Is there any way to reform the rub rail back to it's original position?? Heat gun perhaps? It's a 1997 SN so the rub rail is 2 piece black rubber and does stick out a ways from the hull. Really bummed that it happened. Any thoughts??

skier2788
I had a cradle that was too narrow and would squeeze the rub rail on my nautique just left a little dipple. With time and summer heat it has come out. Depends on how bad but mine was where the cable ran and had 1/2 in. Pvc pipe over it would dent the rail an 1/8 to 1/4 in. Would pop back out after a day or two
Baller ForrestGump Posted January 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted January 24, 2014 You can pull the cover off the rub rail joint in back and peel the rub rail all the way up to where it's crushed. It will just pull out, as it's hollow. Massage the section that's crushed back into shape, then push it back into the channel. No biggee. If it won't go back into shape, you can cut the back and slide a smaller piece of rubber fuel hose inside the rub rail in that section.
Baller Wish Posted January 24, 2014 Author Baller Share Posted January 24, 2014 @ShaneH. I know it's a 2 part system. When you say "cover" are you talking about pulling out the inner middle section of the rubrail? Would a little heat (heat gun) help the reshaping process? Also, with the age of the boat, am I risking cracking the "cover".? Not sure what that is..plastic or rubber. Should I put it off till warmer weather? Baller JC McCavit Posted January 24, 2014 Baller Share Posted January 24, 2014 Can the rubber that holds the insert be massaged or reformed?

east tx skier
If the whole thing is bent downward, you may just have a bent screw. Pull the insert, unscrew the screw raise up the rubrail piece, and put in a new screw.

Baller Wish Posted January 24, 2014 Author Baller Share Posted January 24, 2014 Hmmm... I like that idea. Mine is bent up. Maybe that's the issue as well. Thanks!

east tx skier
@Wish For the bends, it's an easy fix. Don't go through the same hole though. There's a little strip along the inside of the hull to tap the screws. As long as you're level, you should hit it.

Baller JC McCavit Posted January 25, 2014 Baller Share Posted January 25, 2014 As can be seen in the picture above, it is only the lip that is deformed. I was told to try a heat gun, but I was afraid I would damage the gel coat. I guess I could unscrew several feet and pull it away from the side of the boat when try the head gun. Baller Wish Posted January 25, 2014 Author Baller Share Posted January 25, 2014 Maybe place tin foil and back it with some foam (seat cushion kind) over the gel coat to keep the heat off. My thought was heat gun as well.

Baller RichardDoane Posted January 25, 2014 Baller Share Posted January 25, 2014 most heat guns have the ability to be adjusted, so turn down the heat, be patient as you warm up the rubber, and the gel coat will be fine

Baller Wish Posted February 2, 2014 Author Baller Share Posted February 2, 2014 Well, turns out the best plan of attack in reshaping the rub rail was to dooooo........nothing. It actually went almost all the way back to normal. If you were trying to find it you could. If you were just looking at the boat you'd never see it. I wish I took a before picture because it was jacked. Looking at the boat then, it was impossible not to see it. Gonna wait for some hot summer days here in FL and stick it in the sun and see what happens. Amazing stuff that CC used as a rub rail in 1997 to say the least. Thank you all for the advice and I'm sure it will help others.
