Sound Level Testing

Three-event boats must not produce more than 75 decibels of sound while passing through the slalom course at 34 and 36 mph. Sound levels are recorded through a sound meter at a distance of 125 feet from the course centerline, with readings taken in each direction. The purpose of this test is to make sure these boats are not in violation of generally accepted maximum noise level standards.

Yes, I have the test criteria. I am looking for the actual test results. For example, 75 dbs sustained is the maximum acceptable noise limit. The tests, however come back with the boats in the 69 db range. 75 dbs is about six times louder than 69 dbs, so there is a big difference between what is allowed and what we actually have, and what we have is better. I need to demonstrate this to a municipal board on Monday latest, so I am looking for the actual

data. USAWS headquarters seems to be closed for the holiday.

@klindy I'm pretty sure they were in the office today I talked to someone there today but I could be wrong about her actually being in the office. @lpskier you are cutting it pretty close to get the info for your meeting.

@MattP I called Melanie Hanson around 4:00 this afternoon (just before posting on BOS), with no answer, hence my conclusion. Yes, I am cutting it close. However, on December 2, I got all my municipal approvals and was totally good to go. On December 31, I received a letter from a local environmental group raising the complaint, and a notice that I was back on the Village Board's agenda for January 6. I spent most of the day yesterday and a chunk of today putting my response together. Now I am trying to gather the hard data to back up my positions. So the point is, no, I did not wait until the last minute to get on top of this stuff!

@lpskier contact @The_Krista krogers@usawaterski.org and she said she will get you data for your meeting. I hope it goes well! I take it this on a public water way or in a city area that would have some good exposure.

@lpskier: I recall some of the Waterski mag boat tests included noise data, they might be of some help. One challenge you will have is how to demonstrate / inform the audience on the effect of tone. A jet ski at the same dB level as a tourney boat is certainly more annoying.

@lpskier you might just contact Will Bush. If he has the authority to give out the data, you will get it immediately.

Email me for his contract info.

I would assume that most boat buyers sooner or later needs

offical environmental evidence to defend our sport.

For example:

- Noice

- Fuel consumption. Fully equiped, fuled up boat. Different speeds and line lenght. Defined track. X number of passes.

- Polution

- Waves..... hmm can this be measured?

- Etc.

Feel free to add ideas!

My event is still alive, but there are certain elements out there that would like to see me go away. I should be officially awarded the event this weekend, and then I will enter into a contract with the municipality, and the contract should close the door on further discussion. I think I am pretty safe at this point, but I keep my fingers crossed just in case. The event starts July 31 and it is already a part time job. Thanks for asking, Mark.
