Have You Taken Any Big Falls This Season?

After an extended layoff (since 2004) from the sport coming back has been great, plenty of pain but worth every bit of it. That first big fall was coming, sooner or later I was going to find out if I could take a real hit.. Last week in a cross wind I got pushed a little narrow and clipped a ball, the ski skipped out and I took what was apparently a pretty spectacular crash. Luckily I suffered no injury at all and got up to complete the set, just glad that first big crash is out of the way....

I took 1 that looked bad in a tournament when my bindings pre-released....... gave the crowd something to see, but was just a bumber cause it was headed to a tournament PB! Oh well, learned the lesson on equipment failure......

I took one trying to do a fancy tick-tock thing that a way younger skier was doing at the lake. NEVER AGAIN WILL MY SKI LEAVE THE SURFACE OF THE WATER (on purpose....)

2, bruised my left rib cage in the course trying to get a 32mph; that took about a week to back in. Then a couple weeks later a doosy while free skiing, I simulated a hard pull out in choppy water, buried a tip, went down hard, and bruised my right rib cage. Two weeks that time. I won't try that again. I guess I am a slow learner.

I usually take about 1 big OTF per season. It used to be a lot more, but after 2 skiing caused surgeries in a 2 year period, I have been skiing a lot smarter and stop skiing when I get out of whack. I even let go of a potential big slack hit last year on a tournament pass where I was already a buoy past my previous PB of 1.5, and was on my way to 4 ball when I let go.

Most of my crashes are pretty tame...usually more danger for the people in the boat from the handle that becomes a missle. My worst feeling one was actually this past Sunday - a buddy thought it would be fun to have a wide ride "tournament" on our second set. I've never ridden a wide ride, and haven't gone 30 mph in about 30 years. The pull through the gate was terrifying. At 1, the ski kept going in the same direction, and I went back towards the boat, starting with my arm/elbow/shoulder in the water in a violent explosion. Left shoulder is still sore. No interest in ever riding a wide ride again.

Early this season I stuffed the tip right after the second wake. (I think there is a video of Nick Parsons with the same wreck) I went from skiing to face plant in the water in less than a second. It was one of those wrecks were when you come to the surface you start to wiggle your toes to make sure you aren't paralyzed. pretty scary at the time but didn't stop me from skiing the next set.,

3 this year. One was head over heels for 3 complete revolutions/body slams and really rang my bell. One was a tournament OTF and rolling/helicopter ankle sprainer. The last one was an instantaneous face plant (like @skinut mentions) that made my neck hurt. I also checked to make sure I wasn't paralyzed.

I average 2 to 3 a year. The ankle sprainer was the only one that has kept me off the water in the last 8 years - and that was for 10 days.

The worst slalom equipment I own is between my ears.

My Mississippi ski buddies Jack Middleton & Jay Leach really don't care about my form or buoy count - they just want video of the, as @SkiJay says, "a full-speed, set-ending, endo off the second wake" These two guys live for that! And laugh like hell. It really hurts my feelings.

Every few years.... Early this season was my time, I stuffed the tip into the wake coming out of my off side turn. The bad part it was my 2nd pass during a set with Wade Cox, I had to continue skiing when I really wanted to get in the boat and call it a day!
