Baller colo_skier Posted September 23, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 23, 2013 Just wondering what the ski season is around Houston Nov through March? Does anybody ski year round? If so is it drysuit time?
Oldutskier
You can ski year around for sure. Some (me) opt for drysuits. Others tough it out with heater shirts or wetsuits. Moving to Houston?
Baller gregy Posted September 23, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 23, 2013 In Houston if its too cold for you just wait a day or two it warms up quick, rarely stays cold long.
Baller colo_skier Posted September 23, 2013 Author Baller Share Posted September 23, 2013 @Oldutskier. No not moving there. Have some good friends that just moved there an the air fares are pretty cheap from Denver ($49 one way). Once our lake turns to Ice (mid Dec to mid Feb) might be nice to pay a visit for some weekend or two. Just was wondering if anybody skied there and if there was a chance to get some sets in with anybody. Just getting info for now.
Baller gregy Posted September 23, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 23, 2013 If used to skiing in Denver, Houston is no problem year around. You'll probably laugh at us Texans, it gets in the low 70s here and its cold.
Baller Kelvin Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 Can't say I would join you in the water, but I would be happy to give you a pull.
Baller thompjs Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 When it is 50F here with NW wind at 25 it is pretty nippy for anyone. The humidity makes it feel a lot colder. Check the weather before you come!
Baller thompjs Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 On the other hand, one Christmas I skied in just shorts 80F water wasn't even that cold. Was a nice set.
Baller ForrestGump Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 Water was 80 degrees today and I was thinking a rash guard wouldn't be bad. LOL
Baller Texas6 Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 Wore a heater top yesterday morning in the 80 degree water. Would hate to put myself at risk for pneumonia or hypothermia
oldjeep
Wetsuits? How cold does it get in Houston?

Baller Texas6 Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 @oldjeep - It may freeze once or twice a year tops. But it's a wet cold:)
JGray
I ski year round but I am a wimp and go to a drysuit pretty quick and come out of it late. But honestly January and Feburuary is really the only 'iffy' months with cold, rain and wind. Usually take those off and let the body heal a bit. Baller skihard Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 As a relocated Canadian I plan on skiing year round. Good thing I have Jim as my neighbor! Someone needs to drive the boat! :)
Baller thompjs Posted September 24, 2013 Baller Share Posted September 24, 2013 @jipster43 I don't think anyone ever believes how cold 50F is here in Houston. I just got back from CO camping trip a few weeks ago. I was walking around on a sunny morning in T-shirt at 42F. No one does that here. When I was building Lakes of Katy, it would require pile jackets and windproof clothing at 45F to work outside all day. @oldjeep -- water can be in the high 40's in the winter here. Most need a wetsuit or drysuit.
