MandaK
Hi Everyone - I am new to the board as this is my first post and really came here for some advice if any of you have it! I am 39 (female) and have been skiing for a few years now (late starter) but have only ever skied on two skis (was starting to learn on one) and in March this year did the splits on my skis and ripped my hamstring completely off the bone and had to have it operated on. I love water skiing and have never done something so much fun. What I want to know is, has anyone on here done this injury and how? and if so did you get back to skiing again? Did your leg ever feel as strong again etc? It was my right leg which is my dominant leg and I don't know if its ever going to be strong enough to now learn on one ski or I have been thinking I could wake board as getting out of the water doesn't look like your hamstrings have to take as much of the load as getting up on one ski? I am obviously never going to be doing tricks or jumps or anything like that but I really want to get back into it so would love to hear about other people's experiences as the only other person I know who did this water skiing never skied again! Baller A_B Posted August 3, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 3, 2013 Ouch! That sounds terrible. Athletes in other sports get back into it with rehab, so assume skiing is no different. I know a tricker who had a bad pull on a hammy from toe tricks, but he came back as good as new. Need to get a wide ride slalom and pitch the two skis! Baller bkreis Posted August 4, 2013 Baller Share Posted August 4, 2013 @Mandak You should have a full recovery. Do your rehab 110%, eat nutritionally well for healing purposes, resist the urge to push to hard too early, but keep it moving once given the green light. If you have any questions pls feel free to email me..
MandaK
Thanks for your reply bkreis - have been doing all those things you have suggested! Wow OB - that looks horrific! I had this amazing surgeon here in Australia who has done a lot of these hamstring re-attachments so my scar doesn't look quite that bad! My bruising wasn't that severe either compared to most others - geez he looks like he has been mauled by a shark! Did the guy in the photo ski again? Shortenit
MandaK, I had a complete hamstring avulsion in July 2010, had the surgery two weeks later. You will recover fine, just takes time and rehab, don't overdo it. You should get back to close to 100% in time. I was back in the course just under a year later and skiing better than ever. Email me if I can be of any help, it's a difficult injury.
