danspence
Just been out in water 39F and air 35F. Had my Camero 2mm titanium on. Hands and face went straight away but body was fine, Camero working well. What's the coldest set you have had?

Baller Chef23 Posted January 13, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2013 I skied when there was ice in the corners of the lake when I was a kid but these days if combined air/water isn't at least 100 I stay dry.
danspence
I think my combined was a bit off the 100 mark. I am using the 2mm CAMARO Titanium long suit, haven't had it very long but love it.
Baller Sethro Posted January 13, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2013 Air was 20F and water was hovering around 33-34F...ice formed on all splashed surfaces, as well as shoreline (river) was iced up. Probably won't ever do that again.
danspence
@sethro that is really cold that, don't think I have ever been out where the air is below 32F
Baller Razorskier1 Posted January 13, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 13, 2013 Slalom at 28 degrees F. The next week we ice skated on the lake. Barefooting I've skied below zero F on the river here in MN.
danspence
@razorskier1 I thought it was cold on my face at 36mph cant imagine what barefooting would be like.
Baller liquid d Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 Man, our water temp was down around 72 today, air about 83....but if the sun went behind the clouds....a little chilly!

Baller A_B Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 I'm with @Sethro. Will never do that again either. Broke thin ice up with the boat. Icickles hanging off the bow rail. One of the dumbest things I have done.
Baller auskier Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 It would be difficult to get under the 100 degree rule here in aus. (you could if you skied early during a frost, but who skis early morning in winter?!) coldest ive done is probably around 120-130.
Baller addkerr Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 @liquid_d you should try having to ski a season in the UK. The temps you said were pretty much the hottest we hot this year.
Baller hacker Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 spent nearly 8 years (3/98 - 11/05) skiing at least once a month in upstate ny (all winter skiing was in open water). The coldest we did was mid 20's air, water 33. As a side note, after not skiing in January since '05, we went 2 days ago. Air 50, water 43. Baller estrom Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 We'll ski a few times during the winter when the sun is out. The combined temp can be in the 80's.
Baller Chef23 Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 I got to ski on Friday in southern FL the air was 84 and the water was 74*. It made me want to move.
Baller usaski1 Posted January 14, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 14, 2013 Well.. theres polar bear day.. just in your shorts on new years day.. air 47 water 47... no dry suits or wet suits... My wife did it this year...
danspence
Agree with @addkerr, gotta get out when you can in the UK never know what the weather is going to do. Got to time the rain and wind intervals in the summer.
PBD
My record is combined temps in the 80's, forty something air and forty something water. A guy I ski with a lot had a day that was in the 30's for air and 30's for water. I'm glad I missed that day.
Baller BraceMaker Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 Always feels coldest on a crisp summer morning or right after sunset on a coolish summer day. You don't bother with the wet suit, you don't remember to bring a sweatshirt or a towel, and then you ski and sit in the boat with no heater, no hot water shower, no bucket of warm water. And that can chill you to the core. Coldest however was 40 air 40 water @ thanksgiving with trunks and a jacket, no dry/wet suit. That was nippy, however I had a towel, a hot water shower on the boat, and a sweatshirt/pants. So I didn't actually feel that cold other than jumping in, taking the set and climbing back into the boat.
Baller Cam Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 At Loch Lomond waterski club we do a fancy dress waterski for charity on New Year's Day every year most adults don't wear wetsuits for the event, it can be pretty cold for anyone that falls lochlomondwaterskiclub.co.uk/LLWSC%20events.htm
danspence
Yeah know what you mean @bracemaker, those mornings where you think you will be fine with any wetsuits and just go shorts can catch you out. We have hot water down the club so normally just jump straight in shower after. @PBD sounds just like the temp I had the other day, I was only out for 4 passes. @Cam good pictures and idea like, I bet it was cold if you fell in. Baller mlange Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 I always used to think my worst of 52 air, 46 water was crazy. That seems down right warm given some of the other responses.
markchilcutt
Well the water had about 1/8 to 1/4" of ice we had to break away with the boat and the air was in the low 40's. It was early December on Utah lake a few yrs ago.
Baller ThePantsManCan Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 My coldest set was technically the 37 air and 37 water on Dec 24th 2011. That was cold, but the runs were short. We got over it quick with the brilliant sunshine that day. What was much worse was Oct 15th 2012 when the other lake got to 27F air and the water was still in the 50's. It was sooooo much worse and it was in the shade of a mountain. I hadn't eaten any breakfast and by the pullout for my second run through the course my stomach felt sick. Game Over. Baller Than_Bogan Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 I'd guess the coldest I ever skied was one of the first Thanksgivings after I moved onto my current lake. My family was coming in, and it just seemed wrong not to get all the cousins together who used to ski together all summer, and get out there. But we got hit with a coldsnap and the air was right around freezing. Water was likely warmer, although I don't have a boat thermometer (don't want to know). That was amusing, but doesn't need to be repeated. The most uncomfortable may have been a different November when it started snowing (pretty rare in early November even where I am), and I thought it was my best chance to say I waterskied while getting snowed on. About 10 seconds after I got up, it changed over to freezing rain / sleet. Although I'm sure it was cold, temperature was the least of my worries at that point! Baller PatM Posted January 15, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 15, 2013 Skied on this past St. Patrick's Day (of course). It wasn't too bad in a drysuit, but I don't think I will repeat it again. Winter skiing is snow skiing, not water.

ksu_skier
We did new years day skiing at Spray Lake in Wichita, KS. Air temp of 20 and water temp of 32. Luckily, the geese on the lake kept the surface from totally icing over! Dry suit and cooler full of super hot water helped mitigate the cold! All the ice made wiping down the boat pretty difficult! Dusty
Some of you are waaay tougher than I. 72 degrees combined- 35F. air, and 37F. water. We were 'training' for an early tournament. Ice cream face was epic... My partner that day regaled me with his coldest, where he and the others broke out a boat and skier path and shoved the 1/4" slabs under the ice outside the course. I was really glad I was not part of that.
Baller swc5150 Posted January 18, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 18, 2013 35 degree water, 50 degree air. My buddy had to use an ax to bust out the ice at the landing in order to put the boat in. We also had to avoid ice sheets and small bergs on the river. It was actually an awful experience, as I've never been that cold before (or since). My feet and hands hurt extremely bad, however my Sahara kept my body fairly warm.
danspence
Can honestly say I've never had to break the ice which from what you guys have said is pretty bad experience. Think I will avoid doing that one in the future.
Baller addkerr Posted January 18, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 18, 2013 @danspence judging on the forecast at the moment i think thats what we will be doing this weekend. Baller_ Wish Posted January 20, 2013 Baller_ Share Posted January 20, 2013 Tried to get out early season every yr in MN back in the day. Some of the same experiences listed above. Mom worked for the local small town paper and we'd make the news every yr we tried. Unfortunately the headlines did not read " local athletes brave the cold" or " dedicated skiers push the limits " more like "crazy water skiers at it again". .....I should have know better then to trust mom. bogboy
Took advantage of a short lift in the fog today, and had a good free ski on lake stevens. Water getting colder, and the hot shower getting weaker. Took apart the shower hoses at the control and noticed the hot control manifold almost 100 percent clogged with dark brown goo on the screen. Cleaned it up and will try the hot shower soon.
danspence
@deep11 Respect for that like. If it is anything like the North East no way I would consider going out, good 3 foot of snow everywhere. OTF bet that was fun.

Baller rodecon Posted January 21, 2013 Baller Share Posted January 21, 2013 Hello all, i am new here, been lurking for a couple of months but love the site! We ski in the Finger Lakes of Upstate NY and went 2 weeks ago when we had unseasonably warm weather, air 50, water 40....@hacker, sounds like you went out the same weekend......where did you ski? We skied canandaigua lake as we couldn't get in @ conesus due to low Water. Coldest we ever skied was 3 years ago, air mid 40's and water 36......it was pretty rude on the hands and feet.....but totally worth it! Also if any ballers find themselves in Upstate NY you can always get a tug on Conesus Lake! Cheers, Sam Rode
