cwillygood
Like many fellow ballers, im headed down there for nationals... how do you guys like the water there? I'm excited to see how my strada rides in the slower water of Florida compared to up here in the east!
Baller Rich Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 okeeheelee is a great site, deep water, still, as long as a strom doesn't blow thru. I have always had great scores there. However I have skied in a few rain stroms too! Had my best performance in white caps! LOL !!! 3@
Baller Drago Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 Cwilly, been going there since 93(?). From Colorado where the water is generally pretty quick. Stay mellow, keep the handle, maybe think, "Headwind"
Baller liquid d Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 Slow water, pull long like a headwind and it will hold when you get late and need it....one of best in the world...so many pb's run there.
Baller webbdawg99 Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 One of the M4 guys I ski with was trying to get in the top half to avoid having to ski on the turnpike lake. What's the possible reasoning?
Baller PatM Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 Webbdawg, the Main lake skis great, but I don't think Turnpike is much worst. It may be that Turnpike is narrower and a little tighter on the ends, but not short by any stretch. Also the crowds will be on the Main lake. Baller ForrestGump Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 That may not work for him. I know one year in M3 they didn't split it top half/bottom half. Instead, they alternated skiers between Turnpike and Main.
Baller Roger Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 We have a number of locals that prefer the turnpike lake. For me, I can't tell one lake from the other in terms of feel. If you get here soon enough before you ski, take a practice set on lake 5 (the practice lake) to get a feel for the water speed.
Baller disland Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 we call it either Okeeeasy or "the land of no slack"

Baller danbirch Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 You'll love it! Water feels soft, we noticed that coming out of the turns (especially off-side) the ski stays down, and really rips fast back to the wake. You can hear it ripping, sounds amazing! Have fun! Gold Member Than_Bogan Posted August 10, 2012 Gold Member Share Posted August 10, 2012 @cwillygood Just to give a different perspective: Although I haven't been there in several years, in the past I have found it very hard to ski there. Coming from Cochituate, the water at Okeeheelee feels slower than slow. And my style isn't very conducive to slow water -- I feel like I have to put in a monumental effort to get wide even on easier line lengths. I think I would need several practice sets and probably some setup changes to really feel comfortable there. The good news is that your home site might be the slowest site around here, so your adjustment might be a little less than mine. Or you might just love it like everyone else seems to! :-)
Baller GAJ0004 Posted August 10, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 10, 2012 I would like to ski there since there have been so many big tournaments and big names there. since I just did my first regionals, I hope to join everyone down there in the future. Baller Roger Posted August 11, 2012 Baller Share Posted August 11, 2012 As for water temp, I checked today when I got there (we have a pool thermometer on the main lake starting dock). 88 degrees. It has touched 90 a couple of times this Summer, but we have had a good rainy season (for a change) and it has kept the water in the mid to upper 80s all Summer. We are starting pulling practice tomorrow. All lakes have had the buoys changed out and surveyed to += .5" as of today. Come ski and enjoy!
