Heresy on this board, but tricks is the coolest event. There is always a new trick to try within your skill set. If you aren't partial to flips you can go a completely different direction (toe tricks?) and still excel. You can trick without killing your body (assuming you are training sensibly). Boat gas is a lot cheaper at trick speeds. ZO and PP feel pretty much the same. I will concede that slalom wins hands down on tournament judging.

In slalom you ski until you fall or miss. Frustrating by design. In tricks, you design a run to showcase your skills and creativity in run design. Standing up a trick run is like giving an artistic presentation - satisfying regardless of the competition.

Try tricking (even on a wakeboard if you are just starting). It will condition you nicely. You will develop balance skills. And it is fun!

@Than Bogan Darn MIT kids. So competitive but can only handle simple problems (like turn left, turn right). Don't have enough sense to move to where the water is warm enough to enjoy a tricky activity. Stanford and the UC schools rock!

Get an old wakeboard, remove the fins and learn the basic surface turns. You're tricking! Relearn them on a conventional trick ski and pick up some toe tricks and you're competitive. Pick up a couple big tricks (helicopters or flips) and you're hooked! Even in the cold northeast tricks are fun (ask Kevin Jack, Lee Gottschalk, Dave Robbins and a bunch of others).
