Celebrity water skiers?

The newly crowned Miss America, Grace Stanke, is also a skier. She was on the University of Wisconsin waterski team with a couple of friends of ours. We’re told she tricked at the Nationals for Wisconsin in 2021. Apparently she’s also a nuclear engineering student and plays violin. But I know what you young, single guys are asking… can she drive a boat??? ??

Good for Miss Wisconsin / Miss America, but don't get too excited about the helluva athlete part. Collegiate rankings shows a whopping 1.5 buoy slalom PB out of 3 tournaments, with 0 in 2 of them, 320 points for trick, and a max jump distance of 0 for 2 jump tournaments.

Probably best that she chose the violin for talent portion.

@Bruce_Butterfield that would be the typical midwest collegiate skier. We tended to have a couple of good skiers, and then a bunch of kids that grew up on a river behind an I/O but had no idea how to really slalom/trick/jump.
If I were coaching such a team, the skiers who can 3 event or specialize in an event go do it. Everyone else needs a basic 2-ski trick pass (side/side/back/back/360/360), and with any luk get to ride over a jump and land. Beyond that they need to run buoys on jumpers long line and slow speed to grab some team points.

@6balls exactly. The typical ski team recruit "oh, you got up on skis once? Great we need another girl for the jump team". Most on this board don't realize that skiers like that are the norm for many collegiate teams and not the exception. Everyone having fun and enjoying skiing the way it should be.

@Horton not half empty and good for Miss America. Just putting a little reality into some of the posters who were going Ga-Ga and thinking Miss America was a waterskiing superstar.

Some of those skiers grew into better skiers, some just had fun. I'm all for anyone that enjoys a ski boat, skiing, and being on the water. Good for her and any like her. College skiing sure was fun.

@Bruce_Butterfield I would say the reality of tournament waterskiing is sometimes perceived at a higher level than it really is which scares away people from wanting to participate at all.

The fact that Miss America knows competition water skiing is even a thing is a plus, to me. Maybe she’ll give it a little exposure. Maybe even bring tens of more people back to skiing.
