Baller_ Wish Posted September 24, 2011 Author Baller_ Share Posted September 24, 2011 I know I know but Nano describes a shitload of skies. Twist, no twist, mid, wide, regular on and on. Just wondered if folks might know who rides what exactly :-)

Baller Director Darwin Posted September 27, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 27, 2011 When we hosted the first two independent ski tests, I came to the conclusion that it's the Indian (P.C. edit: Native Casino Owner Americans) and not the arrow. Certainly, some skis perform marginally better than others for particular styles but those guys in the top 16 or top 8 could ride a boat paddle. Scot Jones tested 6 different skis the first year of the ski test. He skied 38-off on all 6. Some may have felt better but in the end, they all performed. And, a lot has changed in the 5 years since we did the first test. The performance gap between skis has narrowed significantly.
skicoug
Interesting observation from the bracket showing which were the Goode riders. The top half of the bracket had only 1 non-Goode skier, Todd Ristorcelli. And the bottom half has only one Goode rider.......and he advanced. I am not on a Goode.....but their results are hard to argue about.

Baller Dirt Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Did Chad's ski break and cause him to miss the finals??
Baller skidawg Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Most of the Big Dawgs do pay for their own skis (I can think of only a handful that probably receive freebies). Like stated in Kyle's interview-chad set mine up. I think a big plus of bleeding orange is the support of setting the skis up and knowing that they work like chad sets them up, all you have to do is go ski. But darwin is right, all those boys can run 38/39 on any of the high end skis.
block
Dirt, It was Chet's ski that broke during a 39 off pass.
Baller SM Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Yeah but it would suck if your ski broke in the middle of the pass at the Big Dawg finals. A free ski doesn't replace a once a year chance.
Baller ForrestGump Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Those guys can ski on anything. I can pretty much guarantee that guys like Chad and Kyle and Big Ben could get on an A2 or Fusion and come close to running 39 on their first set, if not run it. Charles jumped on my Fire with my bindings and ran mid 39 on his first set on it and first set ever at 34mph. Only reason he didn't run it is cause he started laughing thinking he was goign to run 39 on his first 34mph pass ever. LOL. They're called Big Dawg's for a reason. Baller Director Darwin Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 I could be wrong, but I believe Ben jumped on a Connelly Prophecy a few years back when his 9100 broke and performed very well. Don't remember many details.
Baller MAD11 Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Joe, If I remember right he won the tournament and then handed the ski back to the pro shop.
Baller Director Darwin Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Marc - I believe you are correct. If memory serves, they allowed him a practice set on the ski before the finals and then, he went out and won the event. As an explanation to the proliferation of Goode's at these high-end 34mph events, there could be a correlation between having the resources to spend $2k on a ski and the resources to pay airfare, hotel and $200 entry fees. I would bet there are some really good skiers who simply do not have that level of discretionary income.
Baller skidawg Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Big Ben did take a practice ride on the prophecy before starting the 16 bracket. It was voted on by the skiers and approved. His old faithful broke in the prelims. I remember distinctly because I was the first eliminated by Ben on the connelly :-(
Baller_ Wish Posted September 28, 2011 Author Baller_ Share Posted September 28, 2011 I'm one of those poor skiers that can't afford airfare, hotel, entry, high end skies..........ahh ...oh that's right... I suck... Never mind.
Baller Razorskier1 Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Watching the Big Dawg is cool, and humbling. Given the increasing representation from ex-pro skiers, however, it starts to make me wonder if there shouldn't be a 34mph pro division. Even the non-pros in this group are running 39 almost every time. Why not just call them what they are . . . professional skiers.
Baller skidawg Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Professional gives the impression that one's living is made skiing. Not enough money to break even at an MM event if you win. That is not why we ski them. Competition, friendships, incredible skiing, but not money. Any event we enter, we generate our own prize money= $200 entry across 50 skiers.
KB
I am pretty sure ALL of the Big Dawg skiers have day jobs. At best those jobs are related to skiing (Seth/Todd) but its still a full time job. Others have flexible jobs that allow them to ski...a lot. But, as dawg said, they dont make a living off skiing so I would not consider them professional.
Baller Razorskier1 Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 Sorry guys. I didn't mean that in terms of making a living. More just a comment on the skill level at Big Dawg, which is a step function above the average competitive skier. I am a huge fan of what all the BD skiers have achieved on the water. KB
Rasor, no worries. Another point that supports yours, I bet several of the Big Dawg skiers train just as hard as some of the pros. Watertime, gym, crosstraining, etc. The skiers that stand out to me are those that dont. I dont know this is true, but I heard Ben doesnt ski much, hardly cross trains, and does ski with the best of them.
Baller 6balls Posted September 28, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 28, 2011 This is about life balance, what you have the time for, how much you can train, what other interests/obligations might be important to you. I think for some of us who can run fairly decent at reasonably short lines, it is easy to think "what if"? What if I had more training time? What if guys I skied with regularly ran a lot shorter than me and could help? What if I got started at a younger age? What if I had regular coaching? Could I have been one of these guys? Maybe... At the end of the day, I'm happy being a professional at work. I'm happy having my family time and other interests which I pursue with the same enthusiasm as slalom skiing (ok, not the same...slalom is my favorite). I'm happy that with limited ski time(climate), very little coaching and PP classic I can put up respectable scores at the select tourneys I attend. When I do go, it's great to meet people and cheer for everyone to rock a PB. At the end of the day, skiing is fun. I love to go to the swamp and ski w/Bob because it decompresses my life. As much as I strive to be a shortline stud, I never want to run a tourney with video replay etc...the seriousness of it all would take away my fun. Sorry, a little off topic re: big Dawgs and their skis. This little dawg is taking his Razor to skiwatch this weekend...bum ankle and all. Yee haw! The above takes away nothing from those with the talent to be the Big Dawgs (whom I'm sure also have other interests and responsibilities as well) as there is definitely a little part of me who wants to be you...hats off! Maybe if I just skied a GOODE....

Baller Roger Posted September 29, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 29, 2011 To truly separate MM from the rest, just make that division's speed 35.0. I've spoken to a number of MM skiers and nearly all said that would be fine with them.
Baller jayski Posted September 29, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 29, 2011 I agree with Roger, 35 is the answer, not that I'm at the level of the Big Dawgs but I really like the way 35 skis and think it would be a good 'next level' for elite 34 guys... Baller Jim Neely Posted September 29, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 29, 2011 So would that be 56 kph - 34.8 mph or 57 kph - 35.4 mph?
Baller Director Darwin Posted September 29, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 29, 2011 The 35mph "bracket" has been kicked around for some time. If there are a significant number of MM skiers who would like to see this happen, all they need to do is start a petition and submit it to the board. I would be happy to present this at our January board meeting if someone can put it together for the rules committee to review. Again, if a majority want it, it can happen. Since this would be an AWSA rule, the KPH relation would not be a factor. We would simply need to establish the split times for 35mph.

Baller jipster43 Posted September 30, 2011 Baller Share Posted September 30, 2011 I was just watching the Big Dawg archival webcast and if my memory serves, Mark Shaw has improved by nearly a full pass over the past two years.
