Gold Member Than_Bogan Posted September 20, 2010 Gold Member Share Posted September 20, 2010 This will further reveal what a pedantic dork I am, but I'm too curious not to ask: Is there a reason everyone was pronouncing Diablo sorta like "Die aab low"? Is the lake not name after the Spanish word for Devil (and the extremely popular video game of the same name), which I've always heard pronounced "Dee ahb low"? Gold Member Than_Bogan Posted September 20, 2010 Author Gold Member Share Posted September 20, 2010 The countries of Spain and Mexico: about 150,000,000 people. The players of the Diablo series: about 5,000,000 peopleSo nobody, I guess.../vanillaforum/js/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gifBeing slightly more serious, every single person whose voice I heard pronounced it roughly the same "non-standard" way -- including those with English and Australian accents. So I was genuinely curious if that place was pronounced that way for some reason. Gold Member Than_Bogan Posted September 20, 2010 Author Gold Member Share Posted September 20, 2010 Speaking of being a geek, I have a little challenge for you:Next time you are announcing I challenge you to seemlessly work in a mention of Dungeons & Dragons. Making fun of it (and/or me) counts, but you can't explain WHY you are mentioning it (not even to your co-announcer off-air), and it can't just come completely out of the blue. Mentioning me by name is allowed, but not in the context of "this guy Than challenged me to mentioned D&D and so I just did" -- that would violate the rule about explaining WHY you are mentioning it.If you can pull that off, send me the tape and I will definitely find some prize to send you! /vanillaforum/js/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif

apodawil
This is a guess, because i not the owner or builder of the lake. It was probably named after Mt Diablo which the lake sits at the foot of. Than Bogan I think you are right with the saying of it. But Again who really cares... Baller kpickett Posted September 20, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 20, 2010 Than - it's a Bay Area thing. We aren't noted for our proper pronunciation of all the Spanish names in our area. I grew up in Los Gatos, which gets pronounced "Las Gatus." Mt. Diablo is the same sort of thing.
