Baller thager Posted September 1, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 1, 2010 Last round of slalom at MS's Slalomfest I tightened my RS-1's all the way down. I know better, and I don't know why I did it. Well, maybe the constant 5 @ -28 each and every round made me delirious and really pissed me off. Can't be sure exactly what happened but following my opener at -22 I opted up to -32 for the headwind. Good gate and nice one ball! Rounding #2 early and wide I extended and started to pull in the line when I felt two distinct pops on my right rear leg about 3" above and behind the knee . I was falling forward on the ski kind of in slow motion and could feel my right heal locked down in the boot. I'm thinking I'm lucky the hamstring pulled first and not my achilles although I did feel pressure there. I'm out for a week to two weeks with a low grade muscle pull. I've learned my lesson. Don't any of you make the same mistake!!!
east tx skier
Just for clarification, we are okay to put the plasti piece up against the boot. We just can't pull the laces tight before doing so. Do I have that right?
Tuney
That sucks dude. Don't ski on it again until it's strong. I think you're pretty safe putting the plastic piece up against the boot, at least I do it on my boots.
Administrators Horton Posted September 1, 2010 Administrators Share Posted September 1, 2010 Here is my test. Put it on. Pay attention to what you are doing. If you can get out without losening. You are good. Â I tighten the bottoms down and pull the tops just snug. Baller eleeski Posted September 2, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2010 I used RS1s for a while this summer and liked them. I hated the bottom laces so I removed them and put a hardshell clip instead (now I can unclip between passes to let my foot relax). I added a free floating tongue to stiffen the forward feel (my ski is kind of funky and needs lots of forward pressure). This allowed me to run the top (stock) elastic laces fairly loose with good feel. With that said, Horton saw me tighten up the top lace and remarked that I might be too tight so maybe I was tighter than I thought. I never fish scale measured the pull at the recommended 30 pounds - maybe I should do that for Kirk.It was hard for me to get out of the boot but IÂ could get out. Of course, I switched back to hardshells when my custom plate broke so maybe I was too tight -Â certainly too tight for the ABS plate.Clips on the lower foot do easily allow a release as long as there is enough padding in the liner. My rear hardshell has clips for the lower foot and a rubber band instead of the ankle cuff clip. It releases very easily no matter how tight the lower clips are.Eric
Administrators Horton Posted September 2, 2010 Administrators Share Posted September 2, 2010 Eric,I love you like a brother but... please people. Do not mod your Radar bindings. Run the top lace a little loose and you are good to go. Baller eleeski Posted September 2, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2010 Agreed, do not modify your boots on my information. But Eddie, consider designing in a clip instead of the hard bottom lace...Eric
Baller Dirt Posted September 2, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2010 I think it was ShaneH (sorry if I am wrong) that had a great idea with RS-1/Strada boots. He said to tighten the lower laces as much as you like. For the upper ones, find the correct tension. Tie a knot where they are the correct tension. To take them on and off, you just lift the top lace off of the side catches or put it on the side catches. You always have the same exact tension. They will ski more consistently and always safely release.

Baller ForrestGump Posted September 2, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 2, 2010 That was me, Dave. Sometimes I even amaze myself with my ingenuity. My momma drowned all the dumb ones.

Baller thager Posted September 3, 2010 Author Baller Share Posted September 3, 2010 Took this pic of bruising today. This is back of right knee. Although I felt the pop on outside right bruising is on left?
Baller ForrestGump Posted September 3, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 3, 2010 Get checked out by an ortho! If you can feel or hear a pop, it's more than a low grade pull. When I tore my hammy, it popped and bruised just like yours. I was out 8 weeks. Same as when I tore the left rhomboid in my back.
Baller thager Posted September 3, 2010 Author Baller Share Posted September 3, 2010 Iced the heck out of it for 48 hours right after injury, then heat and massage. Pain is gone except for certain odd movements. Will have it looked at ASAP. Thanks for the info!
Baller ForrestGump Posted September 3, 2010 Baller Share Posted September 3, 2010 Can you pick your knee up quickly without pain? Like to walk up a step? That will tell a lot.
Baller thager Posted September 4, 2010 Author Baller Share Posted September 4, 2010 Yeah, no problem and no pain. I can even jog now. Some minor pain if I stomp my foot but otherwise feels OK. I thought this would be bad when it happened as I could not kick with my leg to swim in to shore. Skiing will be the test later this week when the Wallies go home!
