RS-1 BooBoo (My fault)

Last round of slalom at MS's Slalomfest I tightened my RS-1's all the way down. I know better, and I don't know why I did it. Well, maybe the constant 5 @ -28 each and every round made me delirious and really pissed me off. Can't be sure exactly what happened but following my opener at -22 I opted up to -32 for the headwind. Good gate and nice one ball! Rounding #2 early and wide I extended and started to pull in the line when I felt two distinct pops on my right rear leg about 3" above and behind the knee . I was falling forward on the ski kind of in slow motion and could feel my right heal locked down in the boot. I'm thinking I'm lucky the hamstring pulled first and not my achilles although I did feel pressure there. I'm out for a week to two weeks with a low grade muscle pull. I've learned my lesson. Don't any of you make the same mistake!!!

Here is my test. Put it on. Pay attention to what you are doing. If you can get out without losening. You are good.

I tighten the bottoms down and pull the tops just snug.

I used RS1s for a while this summer and liked them. I hated the bottom laces so I removed them and put a hardshell clip instead (now I can unclip between passes to let my foot relax). I added a free floating tongue to stiffen the forward feel (my ski is kind of funky and needs lots of forward pressure). This allowed me to run the top (stock) elastic laces fairly loose with good feel. With that said, Horton saw me tighten up the top lace and remarked that I might be too tight so maybe I was tighter than I thought. I never fish scale measured the pull at the recommended 30 pounds - maybe I should do that for Kirk.

It was hard for me to get out of the boot but I could get out. Of course, I switched back to hardshells when my custom plate broke so maybe I was too tight - certainly too tight for the ABS plate.

Clips on the lower foot do easily allow a release as long as there is enough padding in the liner. My rear hardshell has clips for the lower foot and a rubber band instead of the ankle cuff clip. It releases very easily no matter how tight the lower clips are.

Eric,

I love you like a brother but... please people. Do not mod your Radar bindings. Run the top lace a little loose and you are good to go.

I think it was ShaneH (sorry if I am wrong) that had a great idea with RS-1/Strada boots. He said to tighten the lower laces as much as you like. For the upper ones, find the correct tension. Tie a knot where they are the correct tension. To take them on and off, you just lift the top lace off of the side catches or put it on the side catches. You always have the same exact tension. They will ski more consistently and always safely release.

Yeah, no problem and no pain. I can even jog now. Some minor pain if I stomp my foot but otherwise feels OK. I thought this would be bad when it happened as I could not kick with my leg to swim in to shore. Skiing will be the test later this week when the Wallies go home!
