Baller_ adamhcaldwell Posted March 9, 2009 Baller_ Share Posted March 9, 2009 So has anyone ever been so frustrated with fin settings that they just straight up took it out? Or maybe curious to see what would happen? If so, I am interested to hear what it was like! Thomas Wayne
Occasionally a slalom skier has reported breaking a fin off in mid-course. It's never a pretty story. That said, the only time I've ever run six balls at -39' was on a Kidder Redline Pro-Graphite 42" trick ski (at ~ 18mph). Baller alex38 Posted March 9, 2009 Baller Share Posted March 9, 2009 Whats up Adam, I've never tried it, I don't feel New England summers give us enough "wiggle room" to play with stuff as much as other people, however, I have heard of alot of 55k skiers who perfer to not have one when skiing. I heard it gives you more speed (obviously).
miski
hmm - I'd try w/o bindings first... I've read that you should get your bindings right before working on fin setup - maybe that holds for when you start tossing parts too :)
Baller RichardDoane Posted March 9, 2009 Baller Share Posted March 9, 2009 Adam - I'll bet a dollar that no one can run a full pass with no fin in the fin box. Any speed / line length. Any takers ?
Baller Cam Posted March 9, 2009 Baller Share Posted March 9, 2009 My fin snapped off coming out of 3 ball and it was scary, I had no control over the ski at all. Then again if you watch edged and see the course being run on the "barracuda" then I bet someone could do it. 35 in the bag
I'll take the bet!   But it'll be mid to late May before I "will" do it.Plan A - 22 mph, 75ft line, MPD 68" (subject to revision)Plan B - Increase or decrease speed to find maximum edge holding combination.Plan C - add 15' to rope length (you said "any length").I have no doubt what so ever."Double or nothing" - that I do it within the first two passes.......and without any previous slow speed practice.John M. Guest
two things: 1) if anyone does this I want the video 2) if anyone gets hurt I did not encourage this idea.
Baller RichardDoane Posted March 10, 2009 Baller Share Posted March 10, 2009 John - you're on. Make sure there's a video in the boat. Anyone else who wants to chip in, we can all donate to whatever charity floats our boat - punn intended ! Administrators Horton Posted March 10, 2009 Administrators Share Posted March 10, 2009 Back in the early days of fin adjsuting I was in the boat when the great JD "Turbo" Wisbang (Ellis) lost a fin on the way to one ball. Seems he adjsusted it and did not tighten. The edge change was HUGE! He has been goofy ever since. bf_OldAccount
A few years back, we had a contest to see who could run all six on an old Cypress Gardens wooden ski with no fin and no bindings. One of us (not me) was able to complete a pass at around 17mph. No one tried shorter than 15 off. I think having bindings may have helped... Baller eleeski Posted March 11, 2009 Baller Share Posted March 11, 2009 I tried moving the fin to the center of the ski (between the feet). It wasn't dangerous because the ski worked so badly that you couldn't generate any speed. Try it and have fun.Eric
Administrators Horton Posted March 11, 2009 Administrators Share Posted March 11, 2009 Again: this idea is not encouraged by BallOfSpray BABE’S ★ California Ski Ranch ★ Connelly ★ Denali ★ Goode ★ KD Skis MasterCraft ★ MasterLine ★ PerfSki ★ Radar ★ Rodics Innovation Reflex ★ S Lines ★ Stokes
