Baller_ Bruce_Butterfield Posted December 22, 2008 Baller_ Share Posted December 22, 2008 Ok, this was last year, but its freak'in Texas! Right now, its 25F outside. If it was easy, they would call it Wakeboarding
Old MS Accout
If I post a picture of my lake right now you guys would think its the Mars rover. The ice is thick enough to drive on and we will haul rocks to the islands after the holidays.
Marco
MS- How thick does the ice have to be to safely drive a small backhoe loaded with rocks without fear of breaking through? We have to load up our islands as well, but have been doing it by pontoon boat in the past. Way too much work. Our ice doesn't get as thick as yours up in South Canada, but it might get as thick as 6" give or take. Old MS Accout
We need 9 inches of clear ice to drive a Pick up truck. You cannot deal with it at 6 inches but sledding the rocks from shore to islands is eaiser then summer boat work. I wont take a loader full of rocks out until 12-14 inches. I sure would like to borrow you 12 inches from our lake.
Administrators Horton Posted December 23, 2008 Administrators Share Posted December 23, 2008 Word to the wise. The western region lost a skier a few years a go who thought the ice was thick enough. Bummer way to die. Bummer for friends and family. Be freak'n carefull. Baller RichardDoane Posted December 23, 2008 Author Baller Share Posted December 23, 2008 I don't think I'd drive a rock-loaded backhoe onto a frozen lake - better left to the Discovery Channel and the "Ice Road Truckers"

Marco
All good advice. I think we will keep the equipment off the ice, but "sledding the rocks" is a great idea. We could even set up a winter Bocce tournament. Happy Holidays to all! Old MS Accout
We loose 5+ people each winter due to cars, snowsleds and ice fishers who just cant wait for it to thicken up. Our max depth inbetween the islands and shore is like 5 feet so at least a guy could stand for a few minutes before you pass out.
