A guy walks into a bar on Halloween. He’s about 5-foot-7, athletic, and wearing street clothes. The bouncer takes his ID, studies it, and refuses to let him in. He’s absolutely sure it’s a fake.
“I mean, who goes out on Halloween with a license that says Freddy Krueger on it?” said Frederick Krueger IV, the world record holder in water ski jumping who will vie for his third Pan American Games gold on Sunday (Oct. 23).
“I’ve ordered more pizzas than you can count that don’t get delivered,” he said. “More than once, I’ve had car rental agencies hang up
on me.”
What these strangers don’t realize is that Krueger was born nine years before the release of Wes Craven’s slasher flick, A Nightmare on Elm Street; he doesn’t particularly like horror films; and his Germanic family tree is filled with long lines of Freds and Frederikas. “They weren’t very creative,” he said of his ancestors.
In 1984, when Nightmare was released, the hazing was almost immediate.
“I thought about a nickname,” he said, “but my middle name is August so I couldn’t go with that.”
Compounding the brutality, Krueger entered high school in Decatur, Ill., at 4-foot-11 and 78 pounds. But when he made the varsity basketball team in ninth grade, the smart kid with the funny name suddenly became “the little white kid who could play ball,” he said.
“It kinda saved me from getting swirlies every day,” he added.
Back home, the Krueger household was full of water skiers. Krueger’s
father (a high school shop teacher) raced slalom. His mother (an accountant) jumped. His two older sisters, Lori and Julie, competed in tricks, jumping and slalom. And from the day his dad held the back of his life jacket and took him over a corner of a jump ramp at age 5, Krueger gravitated toward jumping.

World’s best water skiers will compete for $50,000 in prize money during the professional water ski event September 9-11th

Brentwood, Calif.– September 6, 2011 – The Diablo Shores Pro-Am is returning to the tournament’s namesake private lake located in Brentwood for the 10th year on September 9 - 11th. The world’s top professional water ski athletes will compete in traditional slalom for $55,000 in prize money. The event also hosts an amateur division which will take place on Friday before the professionals compete.
“Athletes from around the world will be here competing,” event organizer and lake owner, Greg Badal said. “Fans will have an opportunity to interact with them, grab photos, and autographs. Returning Diablo Shores are 2010 Pro-Am Champions Will Asher of England and Regina Jaquess of Florida, Karina Nowlan of Australia and the current World Champion Thomas Degasperi of Italy.
In slalom skiing, athletes navigate through a six-buoy course while the boat travels at a constant speed of 36 mph with an initial 13 meter line. After completion of each pass, the rope is shortened by a pre-determined length to increase difficulty. Whichever athlete rounds the most buoys at the shortest line length, wins. Slalom skiers reach speeds of over 70 miles per hour behind the boat and decelerate to under 25 in the turns, making this extreme sport fast, dangerous and exciting.
The event will begin on Friday with the amateur division and concludes on Sunday with the pro men and women finals. Local sponsor, Dublin Toyota, Volkswagon and Hyundai, is offering up a brand-new truck as a world-record breaking incentive along with special deals on all vehicles during the weekend’s festivities. The event will also host a food booth, clothing and ski-gear booths and a jolly-jump for kids. For those unable to attend the event in person, the tournament will be webcasted and archived for viewing live or later. Visit www.diabloshores.com for more information and a link to the webcast.
2011 Diablo Shores Pro-Am Schedule of Events:
FRIDAY: 8am- Start with our top amateur skiers from California, Oregon, Washington, Canada and more.
SATURDAY: 8am- 5 pm Pro Men, Masters 55 and Pro Women
SUNDAY: 9am - 3pm Finals Pro Men and Pro Women

The top waterski jumpers in the world will gather in Madrid, Spain, for the first time to fight for the title of Madrid Pro Jump Champion and continue their battle for the World Ski Fly Tour belt. Freddy Krueger, Zack Worden, Scot Ellis, Damien Sharman and Tom Asher are just a few of the jumpers from around the globe that will be attending so needless to say, a show is guaranteed. Guillermo Moreno de Carlos, local skier will also be there jumping after a recovery from a crash this summer--However, his brother Alvaro Moreno de Carlos will not be able to compete this year due to a knee injury, and he will have to wait until next season to hit the ramp again. Some of these athletes are capable of flying over 230 feet, hitting a 6 foot ramp at an incredible speed of 70 mph.
After a very intense season with pro stops in different countries such as: Australia, USA, and the UK, these jumpers will bring all their intensity and power to Spain and push their limits trying to earn the Madrid Pro Jump’s title before the last stop in Florida, USA, where the winner of the World Ski Fly tour will be decided.
The Madrid Waterski Club is taking care of all the preparations necessary to host the Madrid Pro Jump 2011, making sure everyone attending--to watch or fly--will have a great time and an unforgettable experience in Spain.
The event will have full TV coverage and it will be shown live on national TV. In addition, they will continue to show it on different channels the following months. One of the main purposes of hosting the Madrid Pro Jump is to help promote our sport in Spain and show everyone how amazing it is. Being able to grow with more supporters and host bigger events in Spain the following years is a goal that we will achieve very soon.
