With her first-place finish and qualifying score at last weekend's Masters Last Chance Qualifier at Sunset Lakes, Brooke Baldwin, 16, earned the right to ski in the Masters Women's slalom field. But doing so comes at a price: forgoing the chance to defend her three consecutive junior overall and two consecutive junior slalom titles.
In the end, she decided she was ready to make the jump in slalom. GOODE recently talked to her about that decision and what she expects this weekend.
GOODE: At the last chance qualifier you needed 2.5@39 to qualify and the first round you got 2. What were you thinking heading into the second and final round?
Brooke: In the first round I thought I got around three ball. I fell at the ball but I thought it was 50/50 that I got around it but I must have just skied inside it. I was actually surprised how nervous I was going into the second round. Prior to the tournament I didn't think I'd ski the Women's event, even if I did qualify. But I was really stressing out after the first round because I wanted to make it.
GOODE: In the end, why did you decide to ski in the Open Women's slalom event at the Masters?
Brooke: It's fun to ski with the pros and to be able to say that I'm going to be able to ski on Saturday. Not a lot of people can say that. It's a big deal. And this may be the only set I ever ski on Robin Lake for fun. There are really no expectations. I can just go and enjoy it instead of being stressed out all the time.
GOODE: What were those couple days you spent making your decision like?
Brooke: I was really back and forth on this decision. I don't remember the last time I thought about something so hard.
GOODE: You are going to be on the starting dock with all the big names in the sport. Will that affect you?
Brooke: I'm not that intimidated by them because I've been skiing against them for so long. I grew up with so many of them and more than half of them have seen me as a baby.
GOODE: What do you hope to accomplish this weekend?
Brooke: I would like to stand up my trick run, place in jump in the junior event, and I just hope that I have fun in slalom. I want to ski well, but as long and I'm just enjoying it and having fun, it'll all fall in place. No matter what I do in slalom I'm going to be happy because I get to ski on Saturday.

Got to sit down with the legendary Wade Cox recently, during a film shoot, and I ended up simply leaving the camera running after getting the real work done. This was the result….
Coxy reminisces about some of his personal performances and experiences during the Glory years of Pro Skiing. If you happen to be at the US Masters this weekend in Callaway Gardens, Wade will be there…so track him down and shake his hand…and you’ll probably hear a story or two while you’re at it.
Orlando, FL (May 21, 2017) – Two trick ski World Records were set yesterday behind the record-breaking Ski Nautique 200 by Nautique athletes Aliaksei Zharnasek and Anna Gay. The trick ski world records were broken at the world-renowned Jack Travers Sunset Lakes location in Florida. They are both pending world records until confirmed, and with a trick score of 12,610 for Aliaksei and 10,880 for Anna, they are both incredibly excited to have such amazing results going into next week’s 58th Nautique Masters tournament.
“It feels incredible to put up such a high score as a world record at the first tournament of the season,” said Nautique athlete Aliaksei Zharnasek. “I worked very hard this off-season to try to push the limits of trick skiing even farther, and it is definitely paying off so far. I'm excited to see what I can do this year on the water behind the best boat I could ask for, the Ski Nautique 200.”
This will be the 26th and 27th world records set behind the Ski Nautique 200, and the third in six days after Nautique athlete Nate Smith broke the slalom ski world record last week at the Swiss Pro Slalom. The Ski 200 has once again proven itself as the best waterski boat in the industry.
“Training behind the Nautique 200 has taken my skiing to a whole new level,” said Nautique athlete Anna Gay. “I really enjoy these tournaments at Jack's, the Travers family does an amazing job making sure everything is just right and the Nautique makes me feel like I'm right at home.”
“It's only the beginning of the 2017 season and the Ski Nautique 200 has once again pulled Nautique athletes to World Record performances,” said Nautique president Greg Meloon. “Anna Gay and Aliaksei Zharnasek delivered record setting trick scores and we are delighted to applaud their accomplishments. I also want to thank all of the crew at Sunset Lakes including the judges & officials for all of their hard work for the Nautique Masters LCQ this weekend."
Orlando, FL (May 16, 2017) – Current World-Record holder and Nautique team athlete Nate Smith broke the world record in slalom skiing this past weekend with 3 @ 43' off behind the Ski Nautique 200. The world record was set during the Swiss Pro Slalom Tournament on May 14, 2017 and is still pending with the International Waterski Federation to be officially ratified. Nate is the current world record holder with 2.5 @ 43' off, and will continue his reign over the slalom ski world by setting yet another world record once approved.
“I couldn’t be more excited to not only win the Swiss Pro Slalom event this past weekend, but also to break the world record once again,” said Nautique athlete Nate Smith. “Being able to practice behind the best boat in the world allows me to put up the best scores in the world. Nothing beats the Ski Nautique 200, and I’m really looking forward to competing behind it again in the Nautique Masters!”
This will be the 25th world record set behind the Ski Nautique 200, a record in itself. The Ski 200 remains the leader in terms of setting world records and personal bests in the three-event world, and delivers power and performance that is unmatched by any other inboard waterski boat.
"We're ecstatic that team Nautique athlete Nate Smith has achieved another record-setting performance behind the Ski Nautique 200," said Nautique president Greg Meloon. "It's exciting to watch an athlete like Nate continue to push the boundaries of waterskiing."
